Abstract

Abstract This paper reviews the quasi‐phase‐matched (QPM) waveguide nonlinear‐optic device technologies for generation of quantum‐entangled twin photons indispensable for quantum‐information techniques. After a brief introduction to the concept of entanglement, quantum theory analysis of twin‐photon generation (TPG) is outlined to clarify the properties of twin photons. Then, methods for entangled‐photon generation are discussed. Practical design and theoretical performances of LiNbO3 waveguide QPM TPG devices, as well as the fabrication techniques, are described. Finally, experimental demonstrations of polarization‐entangled twin‐photon generation by waveguide Type‐I and Type‐II QPM TPG devices are presented.

Type-I Quasi-Phase-Matched Waveguide Device for Polarization-Entangled Twin Photon Generation

J. Kawashima, M. Fujimura, Toshiaki Suhara

Quantum-entangled twin photons are expected to play an important role in future quantum communications and information processing. We propose and demonstrate a Type-I quasi-phase-matched (QPM) nonlinear-optic (NLO) LiNbO3waveguide device for high-efficiency polarization-entangled twin photon generation. The device consists of a Ti:LiNbO3channel waveguide, a ferroelectric domain-inverted grating for Type-I QPM, and a thin-film half-wave plate for polarization conversion at the center of the NLO interaction region. Generation of polarization-entangled twin-photons is demonstrated through quantum interference experiment.

Quasi-phase-matched (QPM) Ti : LiNbO3waveguide devices for generation of postselection-free polarization-entangled twin photons are proposed. The devices consist of cascaded two sections of slightly different QPM parameters. Quantum theory analysis of twin-photon beams generated by parametric fluorescence

Toshiaki Suhara, Hiroki Kintaka

Integrated nonlinear optic devices for generation of twin photon beams are expected to be a key device for the development of quantum information techniques. This paper presents a systematic quantum theory analysis on generation of twin photons by parametric fluorescence and properties of the twin photon beams. The analysis uses multimode-pair description including phase mismatched cases. Full description of the quantum states of the twin photon beams is obtained. Mathematical expressions for photon numbers, photon beam powers, efficiency, wavelength bandwidth, and photon correlation are deduced. Numerical data are given for several types degenerate and nondegenerate quasi-phase matched LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide twin-photon generation devices.

Cross-polarized twin photon generation device using quasi-phase matched LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide

T. Nosaka, Bijoy Krishna Das, M. Fujimura +1 more

We demonstrate a cross-polarized twin photon generation device using a LiNbO3waveguide for the first time. The twin photons can easily be split into each photon, and the device has applications to polarization-entangled photon generation. Type II quasi-phase matching (TE/spl rarr/TE+TM) and nonlinear tensor element d/sub 24/ were used for twin photon generation in the 1.55-μm band by the parametric fluorescence.

Review Article: Quasi-phase-matching engineering of entangled photons

Ping Xu, Shining N. Zhu

Quasi-phase-matching (QPM) technique has been successfully applied in nonlinear optics, such as optical frequency conversion. Recently, remarkable advances have been made in the QPM generation and manipulation of photon entanglement. In this paper, we review the current progresses in the QPM engineering of entangled photons, which are finished mainly by our group. By the design of concurrent QPM processes insides a single nonlinear optical crystal, the spectrum of entangled photons can be extended or shaped on demand, also the spatial entanglement can be transformed by transverse inhomogeneity of domain modulation, resulting in new applications in path-entanglement, quantum Talbot effects, quantum imaging etc. Combined with waveguide structures and the electro-optic effect, the entangled photons can be generated, then guided and phase-controlled within a single QPM crystal chip. QPM devices can act as a key ingredient in integrated quantum information processing.
