Laguerre 2D-functions and their application in quantum optics

Abstract

A set of orthonormalized and complete functions of two real variables in complex representation involving Laguerre polynomials as a substantial part is introduced and is referred to as the set of Laguerre two-dimensional (2D) functions. The properties of the set of Laguerre 2D-functions are discussed and the Fourier and Radon transforms of these functions are calculated. The Laguerre 2D-functions form a basis for a realization of the five-dimensional Lie algebra to the Heisenberg-Weyl group for a two-mode system. Real representation of this set of functions by a sum over products of Hermite functions involving Jacobi polynomials at the zero argument as coefficients is derived and it leads to new connections between Laguerre and Hermite polynomials in both directions. The set of Laguerre 2D-functions is the most appropriate set of functions for the Fock-state representation of quasi-probabilities in quantum optics. The Wigner quasi-probability in Fock-state representation is up to a factor and an argument scaling directly given for each matrix element by a corresponding Laguerre 2D-function. The properties of orthonormality and completeness of the Laguerre 2D-functions provide the Fock-state matrix elements of the density operator directly from the quasi-probabilities. The Perina-Mista representation of the Glauber-Sudarshan quasi-probability can be represented with advantage by the Laguerre 2D-functions. The Fock-state matrix elements of the displacement operator and the scalar product of displaced Fock states are closely related to Laguerre 2D-functions.

Transformations of Laguerre 2D polynomials with applications to quasiprobabilities

Alfred Wünsche

Laguerre 2D polynomials are defined and their properties are investigated. The Laguerre 2D functions, introduced in [1, 2] are related to the Laguerre 2D polynomials in such a way that they also include the weight function for the orthonormalization of the Laguerre 2D polynomials. A one-parameter group of transformations applicable to certain classes of polynomials and discrete sets of functions is investigated and applied, in particular, to Hermite polynomials and to Laguerre 2D polynomials. These transformations allow us to represent the polynomials of the corresponding classes by superpositions of the same kind of polynomials with stretched arguments. They contain limiting cases with delta functions and their derivatives and lead to regularized representations of the delta functions and their derivatives as demonstrated for Hermite and Laguerre 2D polynomials. Applications of the Laguerre 2D polynomials and 2D functions and their transformations to problems of quantum optics as the representation of quasiprobabilities in the Fock-state basis and by normally and otherwise ordered moments are considered. The inversion of these representations is obtained in all cases. A restricted design of quasiprobabilities should become possible.

Quantum Fourier transform, Heisenberg groups and quasi-probability distributions

Manas K. Patra, Samuel L. Braunstein

This paper aims to explore the inherent connection between Heisenberg groups, quantum Fourier transform (QFT) and (quasi-probability) distribution functions. Distribution functions for continuous and finite quantum systems are examined from three perspectives and all of them lead to Weyl–Gabor–Heisenberg groups. The QFT appears as the intertwining operator of two equivalent representations arising out of an automorphism of the group. Distribution functions correspond to certain distinguished sets in the group algebra. The marginal properties of a particular class of distribution functions (Wigner distributions) arise from a class of automorphisms of the group algebra of the Heisenberg group. We then study the reconstruction of the Wigner function from the marginal distributions via inverse Radon transform giving explicit formulae. We consider some applications of our approach to quantum information processing and quantum process tomography.

O(N)symmetries, sum rules for generalized Hermite polynomials and squeezed states

Jamil Daboul, Salomon Sylvain Mizrahi

Quantum optics has been dealing with coherent states, squeezed states and many other non-classical states. The associated mathematical framework makes use of special functions as Hermite polynomials, Laguerre polynomials and others. In this connection we here present some formal results that follow directly from the group O ( N ) of complex transformations. Motivated by the squeezed states structure, we introduce the generalized Hermite polynomials , which include as particular cases, the Hermite polynomials as well as the heat polynomials. Using generalized raising operators, we derive new sum rules for the , which are covariant under O ( N ) transformations. The and the associated sum rules become useful for evaluating Wigner functions in a straightforward manner. As a byproduct, we use one of these sum rules, on the operator level, to obtain raising and lowering operators for the Laguerre polynomials and show that they generate an sl (2, R ) ≃ su (1, 1) algebra.

Wigner Quasiprobability with an Application to Coherent Phase States

Alfred Wünsche

Starting from Wigner's definition of the function named now after him we systematically develop different representation of this quasiprobability with emphasis on symmetric representations concerning the canonical variables ( ) , q p of phase space and using the known relation to the parity operator. One of the representations is by means of the Laguerre 2D polynomials which is particularly effective in quantum optics. For the coherent states we show that their Fourier transforms are again coherent states. We calculate the Wigner quasiprobability to the eigenstates of a particle in a square well with infinitely high impenetrable walls which is not smooth in the spatial coordinate and vanishes outside the wall boundaries. It is not well suited for the calculation of expectation values.A great place takes on the calculation of the Wigner quasiprobability for coherent phase states in quantum optics which is essentially new.We show that an unorthodox entire function plays there a role in most formulae which makes all calculations difficult. The Wigner quasiprobability for coherent phase states is calculated and graphically represented but due to the involved unorthodox function it may be considered only as illustration and is not suited for the calculation of expectation values.By another approach via the number representation of the states and using the recently developed summation formula by means of Generalized Eulerian numbers it becomes possible to calculate in approximations with good convergence the basic expectation values, in particular, the basic uncertainties which are additionally represented in graphics. Both considered examples, the square well and the coherent phase states, belong to systems with ( ) 1,1 SU symmetry with the same index 1 2 k = of unitary irreducible representations.

Laguerre-Gaussian modes: entangled state representation and generalized Wigner transform in quantum optics

Liyun Hu, Hong-Yi Fan

By introducing a new entangled state representation, we show that the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode is just the wave function of the common eigenvector of the orbital angular momentum and the total photon number operators of 2-d oscillator, which can be generated by 50:50 beam splitter with the phase difference phi=Pi/2ϕ between the reflected and transmitted fields. Based on this and using the Weyl ordering invariance under similar transforms, the Wigner representation of LG is directly obtained, which can be considered as the generalized Wigner transform of Hermite Gaussian modes.

Displaced Fock states and their connection to quasiprobabilities

Alfred Wünsche

The properties of the displaced Fock states mod a,n) identical to d(a,a*) mod n), (a complex numbers, D(a,a*) displacement operators, n=0,1,2,. . .) are systematically investigated with emphasis on the connections to the Heisenberg-Weyl group and to its irreducible representations. The displaced Fock states comprise the coherent states mod a) identical to mod a,0) as well as the Fock states mod n) identical to mod 0,n) as particular cases. An orthocompleteness relation for the displaced Fock states in the form of the area integral of the operators mod a,m)(a,n mod over the complex a-plane is derived. It generalizes for m=n the well known completeness relation for the coherent states and leads for m not=n to identities expressing the overcompleteness of the displaced Fock states. A basic formula is obtained for the convolution of the operators mod a,m)(a,n mod with the class of Gaussian functions that have exponents proportional to aa*. The connection of the displaced Fock states to the transition operators from the density operator for a single boson mode to quasiprobabilities is studied in general form and specified to the class of transition operators with the displaced Fock states as their eigenstates and connected by convolutions with Gaussian functions to the coherent-state quasiprobability, the Wigner quasiprobability, and the Glauber-Sudarshan quasiprobability.
