Laguerre-Gaussian modes: entangled state representation and generalized Wigner transform in quantum optics

Abstract

By introducing a new entangled state representation, we show that the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode is just the wave function of the common eigenvector of the orbital angular momentum and the total photon number operators of 2-d oscillator, which can be generated by 50:50 beam splitter with the phase difference phi=Pi/2ϕ between the reflected and transmitted fields. Based on this and using the Weyl ordering invariance under similar transforms, the Wigner representation of LG is directly obtained, which can be considered as the generalized Wigner transform of Hermite Gaussian modes.

Laguerre–Gaussian modes and the Wigner transform

Michael VanValkenburgh

Recent developments in laser physics have called renewed attention to Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams of paraxial light. In this paper we consider the corresponding LG modes for the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator, which appear in the transversal plane at the laser beam's waist. We see how they arise as Wigner transforms of Hermite–Gaussian modes, and we proceed to find a closed form for their own Wigner transforms, providing an alternative to the methods of Simon and Agarwal. Our main observation is that the Wigner transform intertwines the creation and annihilation operators for the two classes of modes.

Entanglement of photons with complex spatial structure in Hermite-Laguerre-Gaussian modes

Jie Ying Tang, Yang Ming, Zhaoxian Chen +3 more

Photons with complicated spatial mode structures can be applied for different quantum information tasks. Here, we show the entanglement of photons with complex singularity patterns called Hermite-Laguerre-Gaussian (HLG) modes. Measuring one photon of the entangled pairs by HLG mode basis to define its singularity pattern, we can steer the singularity structure of its partner, while the initial singularity structure of the photons is undefined. We also calculate the HLG specific quantum-correlation function. It can be used to extend the quantum key distribution protocols and to tune experiments dealing with high-order transverse modes. In addition we discuss orbital angular momentum properties of the HLG modes and summarize some features of the singularity pattern of the HLG modes with varying angle parameter.

Continuous variable entanglement of orbital angular momentum states

Mikael Lassen, Gerd Leuchs, Ulrik L. Andersen

We have generated a new quantum state of light composed of quadrature entangled Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. For the generation we used an OPO operating in a new regime where all field parameters are degenerate except for its spatial degree of freedom for which it is two-fold degenerate. The entanglement is manifested in the squeezing of the rotated modes in the Hermite-Gauss (HG) basis, measured with a specially tailored local oscillator. The most promising application of CV orbital angular momentum (OAM) states is their compatibility with atoms, thus allowing for storage of CV quantum information.

Entangled State Representation: From Original EPR Wave Function to Beam Splitter

Rui He

We show that the state vector of the wave function of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen, 1935, (EPR) is a special entangled state representation. Then, taking the entangled state representation as an intermediary, we reveal the intrinsic connection between the HG mode and the LG mode in paraxial optics. Finally, we study how to generate the entangled state representation using an optical beam splitter.

Wigner function of the Ince–Gauss states of the two-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator

Agustín Domínguez-Cruz, Julio C. Gutiérrez-Vega

We present two equivalent analytical expressions of the Wigner function (WF) of Ince–Gauss (IG) eigenstates of the Schrödinger equation in elliptic coordinates for the two-dimensional (2D) harmonic oscillator. To this end, we first derive closed-form expressions for the Weyl transforms for two different Hermite–Gauss (HG) states and two different helical Laguerre–Gauss (LG) states. Using these Weyl transforms, we also obtain the WF of the IG states through twofold finite summations and the WF of parity-definite LG states in a closed form. An alternative expression of the WF of the IG states in terms of the harmonic oscillator’s quadratic invariants is also presented.

Algebraic Characterization of Biphoton Spatial-Mode Entanglement in Higher-Order Laguerre--Gaussian-Pumped SPDC

Takumi Jinushi, Hirokazu Kobayashi

High-dimensional spatial entanglement generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) provides a powerful resource for quantum information processing, yet its mode structure becomes increasingly complex when the pump occupies a higher-order Laguerre--Gaussian (LG) mode. Here, we develop an algebraic framework for characterizing biphoton spatial-mode entanglement by factorizing LG-pumped SPDC into a spatial-mode beam-splitter transformation followed by spatial two-mode squeezing. By choosing the biphoton LG basis radius as the geometric mean of the pump-beam radius and the crystal-induced correlation width, we obtain a natural modal basis in which the two operations can be treated separately. When the pump-beam radius matches the correlation width, spatial squeezing vanishes, and the two circular-mode components of the pump are independently conserved across the signal and idler photons, leading to conservation of both orbital angular momentum and the total spatial mode number. We further derive an analytical expression for the Schmidt number for arbitrary LG pump modes and squeezing strengths, revealing how the radial and azimuthal pump indices govern the dimensionality of the spatial entanglement. This algebraic characterization provides a unified description of the mode structure, conservation laws, and entanglement dimensionality of higher-order-LG-pumped SPDC.
