Simulation of quantum coherence dynamics in macroscopic domain using a three-waveguide directional coupler

Indranil Bayal, P.K. Mahapatra

We consider a three-waveguide (WG) directional coupler with an attempt to explore an optical analogue of the quantum coherence dynamics, which is found to be achievable in the present model at the macroscopic domain. In order to simulate the characteristics of such opto-quantum analogy, a field-coupled three-level atomic system has been undertaken in our study. Mutual correspondence between the field-induced coherence properties in the atomic system and the light transfer related optical properties in the evanescently coupled WGs has been discussed in the dissipative cases at different parameter conditions. The signature of optical impedance is highlighted in this context and the impact of these terms in visualizing the coherence dynamics inherent to a nano-photonic structure is explicitly reported.

Polarization splitter based on a three waveguide directional coupler using quantum mechanical analogies

Pragati Aashna, Krishnan Thyagarajan

Abstract We propose a novel waveguide polarization splitter based on the optical analogue of two-photon Rabi oscillations and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a three waveguide directional coupler. Both these processes are borrowed from three level quantum mechanical atomic systems, in which an intermediate level is used to transfer the population from one state to another without any population occupation in the intermediate level. To show the practical feasibility of the device, simulations have been carried out on waveguides in lithium niobate and we show that two orthogonal polarizations can be separated at the output using the proposed three waveguide structures. We also show that the proposed structure is robust against changes in phase mismatch parameters, as well as wavelength of operation.

Coherent Tunneling by Nonadiabatic Passage in a Three-Waveguide Coupler

Shi Jian, Rui-Qiong Ma, Lin Liu

We propose a nonadiabatic tunneling technique, which is different from the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, to improve the optical tunneling efficiency of a three-waveguide system. The theoretical calculations and results show that the tunneling efficiency can reach 100%. The exact analytic solutions to the nonadiabatic tunneling dynamics are presented. Light dynamics in the optical coupler enable a direct visualization of the population transfer of atomic system under generalized π pulses technique.
