Abstract

We present a variational solution of the sine-Gordon theory, and at the same time the Luther-Emery backward-scattering model, for the range of coupling constants $0<\frac{{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}}{4\ensuremath{\pi}}\ensuremath{\le}1$ or $\ensuremath{-}1<\frac{{U}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}{2\ensuremath{\pi}{v}_{F}}<~\frac{\ensuremath{-}3}{5}$, respectively. This yields a renormalized mass for the fundamental fermion of the massive Thirring model ${m}_{f}=(\frac{\ensuremath{\pi}}{\sqrt{c}})(\frac{1}{{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}}){(\frac{{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{0}}{{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{\frac{{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}}{4\ensuremath{\pi}}}})}^{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ and an energy gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}={v}_{F}{c}^{\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{-}1}{[4+{(\frac{{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}}{4\ensuremath{\pi}})}^{2}]}^{\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{-}1}(\frac{1}{{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{L}}){(\frac{{U}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}}{2\ensuremath{\pi}{v}_{F}})}^{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ in the fermion spectrum for the backward-scattering model where $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{(2\ensuremath{-}\frac{{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}}{4\ensuremath{\pi}})}$ and $\frac{{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{2}}{8\ensuremath{\pi}}={[\frac{(1+\frac{{U}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}{2\ensuremath{\pi}{v}_{F}})}{(1\ensuremath{-}\frac{{U}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}}{2\ensuremath{\pi}{v}_{F}})}]}^{\frac{1}{2}}$.

Variational Gaussian wave functional and the (1+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon model

Yumei Zhang, Bo-Wei Xu, Wen-Fa Lu

The (1+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon model is studied in the framework of the variational Gaussian wave functionals. The renormalized mass depends on two dimensionless parameters. In the phase diagram a first-order phase transition will replace the second-order phase transition for large bare mass. The spectrum of the two-particle states consists of a continuum of scattering states and the isolated values connected to the excitonlike bound states. The energy of the bound states and the phase shifts of the scattering states are explicitly calculated.

One-dimensional backward-scattering fermion model with built-in cutoff

S. Rudin

A built-in cutoff for a fermion model in one dimension is proposed, consisting of (1) a cubic term in the kinetic energy and (2) an "optical potential" counterterm. This model is shown to be soluble by the Bethe ansatz and the mass gap is obtained as a function of coupling constant. This functional dependence reproduces a result obtained by methods other than the Bethe ansatz.

Excitation spectrum of the one-dimensional Fermi gas with backward scattering

P. Schlottmann

The energy spectrum of the one-dimensional electron gas, solved by Luther and Emery for a particular attractive interaction strength $U$ of the backward scattering across the Fermi surface, has been calculated for small deviations from this particular limit. The energy spectrum shows a gap at the Fermi energy, whose magnitude is very sensitive to the interaction $U$. The density of states shows a gap at zero temperature, which is smeared out by the quasiparticle lifetime for $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$.

We derive a regularized exactly solvable version of the one-dimensional quantum Sine-Gordon model proceeding from the exact solution of the U (1)-symmetric Thirring model. The ground state and the excitation spectrum are obtained in the region β 2 < 8 π.

Thermodynamics of the Classical Massive-Thirring-Sine-Gordon Model

S. G. Chung

The proper classical limit $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ of the quantum Bethe-Ansatz thermodynamics gives a new set of integral equations for the thermodynamics of the classical massive-Thirring-sine-Gordon model. The theory contains the thermodynamic information about breathers and solitons, and reproduces the transfer-matrix-method result for arbitrary coupling constant.
