Theoretical analysis of power swapping in quadratic nonlinear medium

Abstract

Nonlinear optical effects in quadratic nonlinear mediums for the traditional frequency conversion generally involve two or three incident optical waves and transfer the power of the input signal wavelength to another new generated wavelength. The authors find that bidirectional power swapping can be carried out by proper waveguide length and power arrangement when two signals and two continuous-wave pumps simultaneously take part in the quadratic nonlinear interactions. Theoretical analyses referring to four incident optical waves are presented, taking into account the cascaded sum- and difference-frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. We apply such theory to ultrafast data information swapping and derive analytical solutions clearly indicating the swapping condition. An example of bidirectional ultrafast data information swapping is demonstrated.

We demonstrate phase-insensitive, ultrafast, all-optical spatial switching and frequency conversion in quadratically nonlinear waveguide arrays in periodically poled lithium niobate. Routing of milliwatt signals with wavelengths in the communication band (1550 nm) is achieved without pulse distortions by parametric interaction with a control beam with 10-W power and wavelengths near 775 nm.

Exact analytical solutions and their applications for interacting waves in quadratic nonlinear medium

Xueming Liu, Hanyi Zhang, Mingde Zhang

The exact analytical solutions for the interacting waves in the quadratic nonlinear medium with the periodic structure are detailedly derived and obtained, and the properties of solutions are analyzed. Three applicable examples employing the exact solutions in the all-optical processing are given and analyzed. The optimized results show that the phase of signal can obviously be increased by proper choosing k, and that the intensity of pump can greatly be decreased in the all-optical switching by means of optimizing k, increasing medium length, and choosing sum-frequency generation.

Comparison of wavelength conversions based on cascaded second-harmonic generation/difference-frequency generation under continuous-wave and pulsed pumping

Yong Wang, Jorge Fonseca-Campos, Chang-Qing Xu +3 more

The implementation of wavelength conversion around 1.55 μm in quasi-phase-matched (QPM) periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) waveguides is mostly based on the cascaded second-harmonic generation/difference-frequency generation (SHG/DFG) process. As usual, a continuous wave (CW) and a pulsed wave are injected into a PPLN waveguide. Of them, the pulsed wave is regarded as the information carrier, and the CW is taken as the control. To transfer the information of optical codes from one wavelength to another, the codes can be applied to either the signal (CW-pumped scheme) or the pump (pulse-pumped scheme). In this work, the temporal and spectral properties of wavelength conversions during pulse propagation as well as the conversion efficiency in the two pumping schemes were compared experimentally and theoretically under different conditions of input pulse width, pump power and pump central wavelength. In the experiments, we adopted an MgO-doped PPLN waveguide, and a 40-GHz tunable picosecond-pulse source. The conversion characteristics were systematically investigated when the CW and the pulsed wave were alternatively taken as the pump at the quasi-phase-matching wavelength of the device. In the theory, we solved the coupled-mode equations and explained the physical insights for the numerical results and experimental observations. The conversion properties of the two pumping schemes were quantitatively compared. The simulated results agree well with the experimental data, and the obtained results provide some guidelines for the design and application of QPM waveguides in wavelength conversion.

Single-photon frequency conversion via cascaded quadratic nonlinear processes

Tong Xiang, Qi-Chao Sun, Yuanhua Li +2 more

Frequency conversion of single photons is an important technology for quantum interface and quantum communication networks. Here, single-photon frequency conversion in the telecommunication band is experimentally demonstrated via cascaded quadratic nonlinear processes. Using cascaded quasi-phase-matched sum and difference frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, the signal photon of a photon pair from spontaneous down-conversion is precisely shifted to identically match its counterpart, i.e., the idler photon, in frequency to manifest a clear nonclassical dip in the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Moreover, quantum entanglement between the photon pair is maintained after the frequency conversion, as is proved in time-energy entanglement measurement. The scheme is used to switch single photons between dense wavelength-division multiplexing channels, which holds great promise in applications in realistic quantum networks.

Optical-frequency balanced mixer

Optical signal processing devices based on quasi-phase-matched three-wave mixing and cascaded three-wave mixing in guided-wave geometries have been demonstrated to operate efficiently at practical pump-power levels. We describe operation of such devices in a balanced mode that allows mixing without wavelength offset and separation of mixed output from pump and signal input without wavelength-selective filters. We present a design for an optical-frequency balanced mixer using quasi-phase-matched, cascaded second-order nonlinear processes. Using this design, we fabricated a balanced mixer in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides that has the expected linear and nonlinear optical performance.
