Excitonic phases in the two-orbital Hubbard model: Roles of Hund's rule coupling

Abstract

Excitonic phases described by the quantum condensation of electron-hole pairs (or excitons) are studied in the two-orbital Hubbard model with the Hund's rule coupling J . Using the variational cluster approximation, we calculate the ground-state energy and order parameters, and show that the Hund's rule coupling always stabilizes the excitonic spin-density- wave state and destabilizes the excitonic charge-density-wave state. The pair coherence lengths calculated in the spin-singlet and spin-triplet states indicate that only the spin-triplet excitons are paired more tightly with increasing J . The single-particle spectrum and density of states are also calculated to clarify the characters of these excitonic density-wave states.

Competition between excitonic charge and spin density waves: Influence of electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings

Tatsuya Kaneko, B. Zenker, Holger Fehske +1 more

We analyze the stability of excitonic ground states in the two-band Hubbard model with additional electron-phonon and Hund's rule couplings using a combination of mean-field and variational cluster approaches. We show that both the interband Coulomb interaction and the electron-phonon interaction will cooperatively stabilize a charge density wave (CDW) state which typifies an ``excitonic'' CDW if predominantly triggered by the effective interorbital electron-hole attraction or a ``phononic'' CDW if mostly caused by the coupling to the lattice degrees of freedom. By contrast, the Hund's rule coupling promotes an excitonic spin density wave. We determine the transition between excitonic charge and spin density waves and comment on a fixation of the phase of the excitonic order parameter that would prevent the formation of a superfluid condensate of excitons. The implications for exciton condensation in several material classes with strongly correlated electrons are discussed.

Excitonic Stripe Order in the Two-Orbital Hubbard-Kanamori Model

Rafael Diogo Soares, Luke Staszewski, Chunhan Feng +1 more

Excitonic condensation and stripe formation are two distinct manifestations of electronic correlations. While excitonic order naturally arises in multi-orbital systems, stripe order is a prominent feature of doped correlated-electron models. Here, we investigate an excitonic analogue of stripe order in the two--orbital Hubbard-Kanamori model on the square lattice, characterized by a spatial modulation of inter-orbital particle-hole coherence and, in the orbital-parity-symmetric limit, spontaneous breaking of a relative orbital $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. Using unrestricted real-space Hartree-Fock calculations complemented by random-phase-approximation instability analysis, we determine how the Kanamori interactions select different excitonic channels. The sign of Hund's exchange controls the spin character of the condensate: ferromagnetic Hund coupling favors triplet excitonic order, whereas antiferromagnetic Hund coupling stabilizes singlet excitonic order. Upon doping, commensurate excitonic density waves develop incommensurate textures, including excitonic stripes and, in the triplet sector, spiral excitonic density waves. We further show that crystal-field splitting strongly reorganizes the excitonic instability by modifying inter-orbital nesting and can stabilize triplet excitonic order even in the absence of pair hopping. Our results establish excitonic stripes as a distinct symmetry-broken state of multi-orbital correlated systems and identify microscopic routes for their stabilization.

Sign-free determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of excitonic density orders in a two-orbital Hubbard-Kanamori model

Xu-Xin Huang, Brian Moritz, Martin Claassen +1 more

While excitonic instabilities in multiorbital systems recently have come under scrutiny in a variety of transition-metal compounds, understanding the emergence of these instabilities from strong electronic interactions has remained a challenge. Here, we present a sign-problem-free determinant quantum Monte Carlo study of excitonic density orders in a half-filled two-orbital Hubbard-Kanamori model with broken orbital degeneracy, which accounts for the role of Hund's coupling in transition-metal compounds. For strong inverted (negative) Hund's exchange, we find numerical evidence for the emergence of excitonic density order, with competition between anti-ferro-orbital order and $\mathbf{Q}=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi})$ excitonic density order as a function of orbital splitting and Hund's coupling. While inverted Hund's coupling stabilizes a spin-singlet excitonic density phase for weak orbital splitting, positive Hund's coupling favors a spin-triplet excitonic density phase.

Even-parity spin-triplet paired states by combined effect of Hund’s rule and correlations in two-band Hubbard model: a brief overview

M. Zegrodnik

Universal aspects of the Hund’s rule induced spin-triplet pairing are analysed within the two-band Hubbard model on a square lattice. According to our calculations, this pairing mechanism in conjunction with the correlation effect can result in stability of the paired phase in the so-called purely repulsive interactions regime, in which there is no effectively attractive interaction. Furthermore, even though all of the interaction terms are of intrasite character, the pairing contains both intra- and inter-site components. In effect, the gap parameter has a mixture of s-wave and extended s-wave symmetries. The calculations have been carried out with the use of the Statistically Consistent Gutzwiller Approximation developed by us in recent years.

Spin-orbital Energy Gap in One-dimensional Spin-orbital Model

Rui Zhu

The spin-orbital energy gap in a one-dimensional spin-orbital model deduced from a degenerate Hubbard model with intrasite Hund rule coupling is studied.By using a mean-field method with SU(4) constraint fermion representation of spins and orbitals the valence bond order parameter,quasi-particle excitation gap and the spin and orbital density-density correlation functions are calculated. It is found that,as the Hund's coupling strength increases the excitation spectra show a gap and the magnetic configuration changes from a frustrating disordered state to a spin ferromagnetic and orbital antiferromagnetic ordered state at J_1/J_2=1/3.

Spin-Triplet Pairing Induced by Hund's Rule Exchange in Orbitally Degenerate Systems: Hartree-Fock Approximation

M. Zegrodnik, Józef Spałek

We discuss the spin-triplet pairing mechanism induced by the Hund rule ferromagnetic exchange. We include explicitly the eect of interband hybridization and treat the problem by starting from an extended Hubbard model for a doubly degenerate band, making the simplest HartreeFock approximation for the part involving the pairing and the Hubbard interaction. The conditions of stability of various phases are determined as a function of both band lling and microscopic parameters. The phase diagram contains regions of stability of the spin-triplet superconducting phase coexisting with either saturated or non-saturated ferromagnetism.Phase diagrams for the cases of constant density of states and that of square lattice have been provided. The inuence of hybridization on the stability of considered phases, as well as the temperature dependences of magnetic moment and the superconducting gap are also discussed.
