Resonance scattering on Ba+-ions of the 4554 Å-line (6 2P3/2—6 2S1/2) of the Ba II-spectrum was observed at various magnetic fields. Measuring the change of polarisation degree (HANLE effect) the lifetime of the 6 2P3/2-term was deduced to be (0.70 ± 0.06) × 10-8 sec.
Abstract Using separated isotopes the hyperfine structure of the 5p 2P3/2-state in Ag I-spectrum was investigated by scattering the resonance line on an atomic beam in parallel magnetic and electric fields. With the theoretical positive sign of the Stark-constant β, the shift of the Heydenburg- and level-crossing-signals with electric fields can be explained by the following parameters: Ag (107) : A = - (32,4 ± 0.5) Mc/sec , Ag (109): A - - (37,3 ± 0.8) Mc/sec , β (2P3/2) = (5.15 ± 0.15) (kc/sec) (kV/cm) -2 , τ (2p3/2) = (6.3 ± 0.6 ) · 10-9 sec.
A thermal beam of helium (2 3 S 1 ) metastable atoms was used to excite coherently the 2 P 3/2 levels of Ca, Sr and Ba in a Penning ionising collision. The coherent excitation of the ions appears as a linear polarisation of the optical emission from the excited ions. The degree of linear polarisation is 5.5, 3.5 and 0.5% for Ca, Sr and Ba, respectively, with the polarisation parallel to the beam direction. Hanle effect signals from the 2 P 3/2 level of Sr were observed and the radioactive decay rate measured.
The Hanle effect on the resonance lines of the Rb87 atom has been observed. The line shape of the signal for the $5^{2}S_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}5^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}}$ is found to be Lorentzian, while that for the $5^{2}S_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}5^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ is dispersion-type. The half-width of these lines was observed to be 3.146\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13 G and 23.0 G\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5%, respectively. These values yield the lifetime of (2.71\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}$sec and (3.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}$sec for the 52P23 and 52P21 states, respectively. The oscillator strengths for the corresponding transitions are found to be 0.673\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03 and 0.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03, respectively. When the temperature of the scattering cell was changed from 0 to 36\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C, an apparent increase of the linewidth at higher temperature was observed. This effect has been explained as a magnetic-field-dependent radiative transfer effect at optical depth of the order of the scattering cell dimensions. When the data were analyzed with such an effect included, the reduced Hanle signal showed no temperature dependence of the half-width.
Abstract Using atomic beam techniques the polarization of fluorescence lines of the Cu I-spectrum was measured in dependence on magnetic field strength. The Cu-atoms were excited by electron bombardment and the magnetic field was parallel to the electron beam. Due to the decoupling of the hyperfinestructure of excited levels of the Cu I-spectrum the polarization of some observed spectral lines [3247 Å (4p 2P3/2 -4s 2S1/2); 5153 Å (4d 2D3/2 -4p 2P1/2); 5218 Å (4d2D5/2 - 4p 2P3/2)] increases with increasing magnetic field strength. These polarization measurements, which correspond to investigations on resonance scattering of light done by HEYDENBURG et al., can be used for a determination of hfs-coupling constants of excited states. The measurements on the 3247 Å-resonance line are used for a comparison with results of accurate level-crossing-experiments. Satisfactory agreement is obtained. The discussion of the polarization of the 5153 Å-line yields an A-factor of (9.6 ± 1-0) MHz and a lifetime of τ ≈1.7 · 10 -8 sec for the 4d2D3/2-level.
The lifetimes of the 5p2P23 and 5p2P21 states of Sr+ and the 6p2P23 and 6p2P21 states of Ba+ have been measured by the Hanle-effect technique with optical excitation from the ion ground state. (The lifetimes of the Mg+3p2P23 and Ca+4p2P23 states were obtained by the same technique and reported previously.) These Ca+, Sr+, and Ba+ states each decay to a 2D23,25 doublet as well as to the ground 2S21 state, and the branching ratios for these transitions have been measured. The ions were produced by introducing traces of the atomic vapor into an argon discharge. Consequently, the cross sections for collisional depolarization of these 2PJ states due to collisions with argon were also obtained from the measurements. The experimental results are given in Tables I and II. A discussion of the ion-atom collisional depolarization cross sections is included.
