Abstract

Performance analysis of optical isolators based on the nonreciprocal property of optical bistability in tapered and chirped nonlinear Bragg grating (NLBG) has been carried out. The design method for detuning adjustment according to input power level and expected on-off ratio is also provided. The results display that, for tapered NLBG, the broad operation range and greater on-off ratio can be achieved by using larger taper slope; there exists an optimization range of chirp coefficient for chirped NLBG; the operation range boundary is shifted toward lower input power with the increased detuning; and the tapered NLBG is more preferable to obtain the larger on-off ratio and wider operation range simultaneously compared with chirped NLBG.

Theoretical investigation on the bistability of nonlinear Bragg gratings

Tian Jian-feng, Wu Zheng-Mao, Xia Guang-Qiong +1 more

Based on the coupled mode theory, the bistability performance of nonlinear Bragg gratings is analyzed theoretically in terms of elliptic integration. The analytical expression describing the relation between the input intensity and the output intensity is presented. Consequently, the dependence of the bistability on the gratings inner parameters is investigated numerically. The results show that, the bistability performance of the nonlinear Bragg gratings depends not only on the product of the couple coefficient and the grating length but also on the couple coefficient and the gratings length respectively.

Bistability of ultrashort pulses in FBG under different nonlinearity profiles

Paulo Victor Ferreira Pinto, T. M. Pessoa, J. M. Jacinto +3 more

In this work, we studied the optical bistability of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) under nonlinear regime, considering three increasing and decreasing profiles of nonlinearity: linear, quadratic and exponential. We varied the nonlinearity range in each profile, and obtained different curves of bistability and reflectivity. We analyzed the powers [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], as well as the width of the photonic band gap ([Formula: see text] of each device under different nonlinearity profiles, and we observed the changes in reflectivity of the FBG. The power intensities [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] obtained for the bistability of decreasing profiles were lower than those obtained for the increasing profiles, and the values of [Formula: see text] were also lower in decreasing profiles, which is useful for optical switching applications.

Effects of Taper in Nonlinear Distributed Feedback Gratings

Gaetano Assanto, Raymond Zanoni, G. I. Stegeman

The effects of taper in a nonlinear slab waveguide with a distributed feedback grating are studied. The role of taper in the operation of the bistable gate is analysed with regard to switching intensity and transmission for various detunings from the Bragg condition. A comparison is made between three different functional forms of taper, namely linear, quadratic and triangular, which could occur in the preparation of a working device.

Optical bistability in reflective fiber gratings

Chao‐Xiang Shi

Optical bistability in a nonlinearly reflective fiber grating through the mode coupling between the LP/sub 01/ and counter propagation LP/sub 02/ modes (i,e., the reflective LP/sub 01//spl rlhar2/LP/sub 02/ mode converter) is investigated by using the coupled-mode theory. Both the transmissive and the reflective properties of this nonlinear device are analyzed, which show that the output-versus-input relation exhibits the optical bistability. The switching power and the bistable hysteresis performances are also discussed. In addition, the comparison between the nonlinearly reflective mode converter (LP/sub 01//spl rlhar2/LP/sub 02/) and the nonlinear fiber Bragg grating reflector (i,e., the LP/sub 01/ and counter-propagation LP/sub 01/ modes) is also presented. It is shown that the former has much lower switching power than the latter.>

Optimization of Optical Bistability in Chalcogenide Nonlinear Fiber Bragg Gratings

Elham Yousefi, Mohsen Hatami

In this paper, we study the bistability characteristics of chalcogenide nonlinear FBGs. The effect of length and third order nonlinearity on On-Off switching ratio and intensity distribution in FBG are investigated numerically. We obtained that there exist an optimum FBG length, that on-off switching ratio is maximized and is independent of the third order nonlinearity.

Analysis of optical switching in a Yb3+-doped fiber Bragg grating by using self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation

Zhigang Zang, Yujun Zhang

The optical performances of the all-optical switching based on Yb3+-doped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) are investigated under the case of self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM). For the SPM case, the optical bistability of FBG under different parameters is investigated. It shows that the width of the hysteresis loop and threshold switching power are strongly dependent on the fiber grating length, fiber grating detuning, and coupling constant. For the XPM case, the expressions of the threshold switching power in the different detuning range are given. The influence of parameters about different detuning and coupling constant to the threshold switching power and extinction ratio are also studied. In comparison with the SPM case, the switching power of FBG under XPM case can be reduced to less than 20 mW by optimizing the parameters of FBG.
