Abstract

Two-mode photon-added displaced squeezed states were previously introduced and their various interesting nonclassical as well as nonlocal properties were studied in great detail. In this paper we present experimental schemes for generating those states using optical devices such as nondegenerate parametric downconverters, displacers, beam-splitters and photo-detectors. The purpose is to see how close to the desired state the generated state can be and how high the success probability corresponding to a given fidelity is.

A Simple Method on Generating any Bi-Photon Superposition State with Linear Optics*

Tingting Zhang, Jie 杰 Wei 魏, Qin Wang

Abstract We present a simple method on the generation of any bi-photon superposition state using only linear optics. In this scheme, the input states, a two-mode squeezed state and a bi-photon state, meet on a beam-splitter and the output states are post-selected with two threshold single-photon detectors. We carry out corresponding numerical simulations by accounting for practical experimental conditions, calculating both the Wigner function and the state fidelity of those generated bi-photon superposition states. Our simulation results demonstrate that not only distinct nonclassical characteristics but also very high state fidelities can be achieved even under imperfect experimental conditions.

Nonlinear displaced Kerr state and its nonclassical properties

Arpita Chatterjee, Rupamanjari Ghosh

We construct a distinct class of nonlinear displaced Kerr states by application of the displacement operator upon a state which is prepared by sending the well-known photon-added coherent state through a normal Kerr medium. A sketch for the experimental setup for preparing the state is suggested. We evaluate some statistical properties such as the photon number distribution, Mandel’s Q parameter, Husimi-Q and Wigner functions, and quadrature squeezing for the nonlinear displaced Kerr state and then analyze the nonclassicality in terms of these standard parameters. We reduce the infinite-level problem to a truncated discrete two-level system by using a low Kerr parameter approximation and then convert the generated nonclassicality into bipartite entanglement between the two modes of an output state of a linear optical device.

Coherently stimulated parametric down-conversion, phase effects, and quantum-optical interferometry

Richard J. Birrittella, Anna Gura, Christopher C. Gerry

We re-examine the properties of the states produced by nondegenerate coherently stimulated parametric down-conversion wherein the signal and idler modes are seeded with coherent states of light and where the nonlinear crystal is driven by a strong classical field as described by the parametric approximation. The states produced are the two-mode squeezed coherent states defined with a specific ordering of operators, namely, the displacement operators of the two modes acting on the double vacuum state followed by the action of the two-mode squeeze operator representing the down-conversion process. Though mathematically equivalent to the reverse ordering of operators, but with different displacement parameters, the ordering we consider is closely related to what could most easily be implemented in the laboratory. The statistical properties of the state are studied with an emphasis on how they, and its average photon number, are affected by the various controllable phases, namely, those of the classical pump field of the two input coherent states. We then consider the multiphoton interference effects that arise if the two beams are overlapped on a 50:50 beam splitter, investigating the role of the phases in controlling the statistical properties of the output states. Finally, we study the prospects for the application of the states to quantum-optical interferometry to obtain sensitivities in phase-shift measurements beyond the standard quantum limit.

Stabilized two-mode squeezed coherent state of light

Tai Hyun Yoon, Chanseul Lee

We present a versatile method for producing two-mode stabilized squeezed coherent state (SSCS) of light with controllable nonclassicality. Our method involves seeding phase-coherent bichromatic fields into a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (OPO), where the global phase difference $\Phi$ between the bichromatic seed and pump fields plays a central role. When $\Phi=2n\pi$, where $n$ is an integer, we show that the two-mode SSCS has its nonclassical measure at its minimum possible value with an effective displacement that compensates for single-photon losses with injected photons. As a result, the SSCS has a larger mean photon number and controllable nonclassicality compared to an OPO without seed fields. We also show that near-perfect squeezing level can be obtained at that effective displacement without being subject to injection rates. We believe that the proposed quantum source of two-mode SSCS with controllable nonclassicality would be useful for continuous-variable photonic quantum information processing.

Quantum fluctuations in a two-mode parametric oscillator

Serge Reynaud, Claude Fabre, E. Giacobino

We describe how a two-mode, above-threshold, optical parametric oscillator can generate nonclassical states of light with a large average number of photons: the fluctuation spectrum of the various fields is calculated, and several quantities are shown to have squeezed fluctuations. In particular, a perfect quantum noise suppression is predicted on the difference between the intensities of the two generated beams. We describe an experiment designed to demonstrate such an effect and show how it can be used to generate high-intensity amplitude-squeezed states.
