Magnetooptic resonances in fluorescence induced by the "wind effect"

Abstract

An analysis is made of the difference magnetooptic signals in fluorescence induced by anisotropic collisions discussed in an earlier paper of the authors [Sov. J. Quantum Electron. 14, 703 (1984) ]. It is shown that different variants of the signals are described by different sets of anisotropic relaxation constants. Variants of signals optimal from the point of view of obtaining information separately on each of the anisotropic relaxation constants are determined.

Contours and widths of the self-alignment magnetooptical resonances in the presence of an intrinsic-emission-induced magnetic coherence exchange between levels

Sergey G. Rautian, Э. Г. Сапрыкин

Self-alignment magnetooptical resonances were investigated theoretically for magnetic coherence exchange between levels, which was induced by a discharge self-radiation or by electron collisions. The structure of the resonances was determined and the nonlinear pressure dependence of the resonance width in the presence of such exchange was established.

Role of collision anisotropy in two-photon processes in a magnetic field. Phenomenological analysis

G. N. Nikolaev, Sergei G Rautian

It is shown that the nonlinear susceptibility tensor of an isotropic medium is axially symmetric because of the anisotropy of collisions characterized by a symmetry axis along the field wave vectors. In the collinear geometry a two-photon process is described by six functions of the frequencies and wave vectors of the fields, whereas in the case of a mirror-symmetric medium it is described by three such functions. A new difference method is proposed for separating just the collision anisotropy contribution to the signal of a two-photon process in a magnetic field. The method makes it possible to obtain several types of difference signal. In a probe field variant the number of possible signals is four and eight for mirror-symmetric and mirror-asymmetric media, respectively. In a variant involving observation of fluorescence at right-angles to the magnetic field and also parallel to the direction of propagation of the exciting light, the number of possible difference signals is eight and sixteen for mirror-symmetric and mirror-asymmetric media, respectively, whereas in the case of observations along a magnetic field there is only one type of signal. An analysis is made of the parity of the difference resonances relative to reversal of the magnetic field direction.

Change in the parameters of a light wave during propagation through a resonant gaseous medium in a magnetic field

А. Ч. Измайлов

A theoretical analysis is made of the resonant interaction between a traveling monochromatic light wave of arbitrary intensity and polarization and the 1/21/2 and 10 transitions in gas atoms in a magnetic field. An analysis is made of the influence of atomic collisions and coherence of the Zeeman sublevels of the terms on the structure of nonlinear magnetooptic resonances in the amplitude and polarization characteristics of the wave. Some features of nonlinear magnetooptic resonances for laser excitation of atoms from the ground state are noted. A study is made of the Faraday rotation and self-rotation of the polarization ellipse of the radiation as a function of the detuning of the wave frequency, the saturation parameter, and the optical density of the gas. The stability of the polarization of light in the medium is discussed. It is noted that these laws may be used to analyze and control the radiation characteristics of lasers and amplifiers when the level of saturation of a resonant gaseous medium in a magnetic field is high.

Fluorescence spectra and the rate of optical collisions

Gerard Nienhuis

The effect of binary collisions on the fluorescence spectrum of an atom in a nearly resonant monochromatic radiation fievd is evaluated in terms of formal relaxation and correlation operators that refer to a single collision. The driving field can be included in the atomic Hamiltonian, and its time dependence is transformed away, giving rise to a modified atom. The authors relate the strengths and the widths of line occurring in the fluorescence spectrum to the rate of optical collisions, and to other elements of the scattering matrix of the modified atom.

Influence of collisions on four-photon parametric processes in gases

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, Gennady I. Smirnov

The influence of isotropic depolarizing collisions on four-photon parametric processes is considered under resonance conditions. It is shown that, in particular, there is no parametric oscillation for J = 0→1 and 1→1 transitions between levels with total angular momenta J and waves with perpendicular linear polarizations if the line-up and orientation constants are equal. A study is made of the possibility of using resonance four-photon parametric processes in the determination of the relaxation constants of multipole moments of electron shells.

Magnetooptic resonances in dichroism and birefringence related to the self-alignment of atoms in a discharge at an arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, S. N. Seleznev, V. A. Sorokin

Variations in structure of the magnetooptic resonances, formed by a transverse magnetic field in the presence of an additional field of arbitrary orientation, are analyzed. These resonances are shown to be sensitive to the type of excitation anisotropy. The ways of detecting false magnetic fields are proposed.
