Role of nonlinear absorption in phase conjugation of infrared radiation under conditions of a four-wave interaction in semiconductors

Abstract

Numerical simulation was used to analyze the quality of phase conjugation under conditions of a four-wave counterpropagating interaction in a medium exhibiting a reactive nonlinearity and nonlinear absorption. It was found that nonlinear absorption may improve the phase conjugation quality which is governed by the difference between the pump amplitudes, by the self-interaction of the pump beams, and by the ratio of the beam radii.

Four-wave interaction of middle-infrared radiation in media with a thermal nonlinearity

Oleg L. Antipov, Alexander A. Betin, E. А. Zhukov +1 more

Theoretical and experimental investigations were made of a four-wave interaction of middle-infrared radiation based on a thermal nonlinearity of absorbing liquids and gases. A study was made of the influence of parasitic effects associated with heating of a nonlinear medium (such as the thermal lens effect, frequency sweeping of interacting waves, thermal expansion of the medium, and convection) on the efficiency of the four-wave interaction and the quality of phase conjugation utilizing this interaction. The conditions under which this influence is minimal were identified. An experimental study was made of phase conjugation of CO 2 laser radiation by a four-wave interaction in CCl 4 with a high reflection coefficient (up to 20% in the cw regime). The attained phase conjugation was limited the thermal lens effect, but this could be compensated.

Self-phase conjugation technique via four wave mixing of middle infrared radiation in a laser active medium

Alexander A. Ageichik, Oleg G. Kotyaev, Yu. A. Rezunkov +2 more

As it is known, self-conjugation of the IR laser beam via Brillouin radiation stimulated scattering phenomenon is not realised because of some physical limits on radiation intensity which are the principal limitations, to the present time. That is why, one of the promising technique of phase conjugation of infrared radiation is a self-conjugation of a laser beam wavefront via four wave interaction in a nonlinear medium with feed-back loop (FWMF) [1]. Unlike conventional our wave mixing schemes, the FWMF self-conjugation is supposed to be realised without any additional beams pumping a phase conjugation mirror.

Self-oscillation in a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror with linear absorption II Anisotropic four-wave mixing

Nitin C. Kothari

The effects of linear absorption on the degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillation of a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror under condition of anisotropic four-wave mixing are considered. The phase conjugation results from nonlinear mixing of two strong undepleted orthogonally polarized counterpropagating pump waves with a probe wave. We consider two types of situation for orthogonally polarized pump beams corresponding to two crystal families: one such as the Bi12SiO20 crystal family (sillenite family) and the other such as the BaTiO3 and strontium barium niobate crystal family. In both of these crystal families the degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillations are shown to occur in the presence of linear absorption, which tends to increase the value of the coupling coefficient required for self-oscillation. Numerical results are presented that exhibit various features of degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillation in both crystal families for different values of the phase ϕb of the backward grating.

Double phase conjugation in media with a local response

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, M V Mel'kumov, K. A. Sviridov

An analysis is made of double phase conjugation in media with a local response. A threshold is found for the generation of a phase-conjugated wave by the double process in a medium with a local response and with additional amplification. An analysis is made of the further possibilities of generation of phase-conjugated radiation in the case of a four-wave interaction characterized by a feedback loop established when double phase conjugation takes place in a nonlinear medium. The threshold intensity of the input radiation ensures possible generation of a phase-conjugated wave as a result of a four-wave interaction characterized by a feedback loop and merging of counterpropagating beams in a nonlinear medium.

Self-oscillation in a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror with linear absorption I Isotropic four-wave mixing

Nitin C. Kothari, J. A. Tataronis

The effects of linear absorption on the degenerate and nondegenerate self-oscillation conditions of a photorefractive phase-conjugate mirror are explored. In this study, phase-conjugation results from nonlinear mixing of two strong undepleted parallel-polarized counterpropagating pump waves with a probe wave. Numerical results are presented that illustrate that the linear absorption tends to increase the value of the coupling coefficient required for self-oscillation. It is also found that the pump intensity ratio r is almost independent of the linear absorption for positive normalized detuning Δωτ between the probe and the pump frequencies and of the zero phase shift, ϕ, between the gratings and the light interference patterns when the gratings are stationary. For ϕ = ±π/2, the variation of r with respect to absorption is symmetric for positive and negative detunings.

Theory of phase-conjugate oscillators I

Wun-Shung Lee, Pochi Yeh, Ragini Saxena +1 more

We have developed a theory for nondegenerate oscillations in optical resonators containing an intracavity phase-conjugate element. The phase-conjugate element consists of a nonlinear transparent medium that is pumped externally by a pair of counterpropagating laser beams of the same frequency and intensity. Phase conjugation of an input beam of slightly different frequency occurs because of nondegenerate four-wave mixing. The theory takes into account linear absorption (or gain) in the medium and is applied to study the threshold behavior of phase-conjugate oscillators. For the special case of no conventional mirrors, the phase-conjugate oscillator reduces to an ordinary phase-conjugate mirror, and our general formulation yields the results of previous studies. Our analysis shows that the parametric gain required for oscillation increases (or decreases) as a result of linear absorption (or gain) in the medium, and oscillation can occur at a frequency different from that of the pump beams in the presence of large linear gain (or loss). The effects of linear absorption (or gain) on the filter operation are also examined.
