A general treatment of geometric phases and dynamical invariants

Eduardo I. Duzzioni, R. M. Serra, M. H. Y. Moussa

Based only on the parallel-transport condition, we present a general method to compute Abelian or non-Abelian geometric phases acquired by the basis states of pure or mixed density operators, which also holds for nonadiabatic and noncyclic evolution. Two interesting features of the non-Abelian geometric phase obtained by our method stand out: i) it is a generalization of Wilczek and Zee's non-Abelian holonomy, in that it describes nonadiabatic evolution where the basis states are parallelly transported between distinct degenerate subspaces, and ii) the non-Abelian character of our geometric phase relies on the transitional evolution of the basis states, even in the nondegenerate case. We apply our formalism to a two-level system evolving nonadiabatically under spontaneous decay to emphasize the non-Abelian nature of the geometric phase induced by the reservoir. We also show, through the generalized invariant theory, that our general approach encompasses previous results in the literature.

Temporal correlation beyond quantum bounds in non-Hermitian PT- symmetric dynamics of a two level system

Anant Vijay Varma, Ipsika Mohanty, Sourin Das

Abstract We study the dynamics of a non-Hermitian PT- symmetric Hamiltonian of a two level system (TLS) which has real eigenvalues. Within the framework of Hermitian quantum mechanics, it is known that maximal violation of Leggett–Garg inequality (LGI) is bounded by K 3 = 3/2 (Luder’s bound). We show that this absolute bound can be evaded when dynamics is governed by non-Hermitian PT- symmetric Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues. Moreover, the extent of violation can be optimized to asymptotically approach the algebraic maximum of K 3 max = 3 , which is otherwise observed for Hermitian Hamiltonian with infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The extreme violation of LGI is shown to be directly related to the two basic ingredients: (i) the Bloch equation for the TLS having a non-linear terms which allow for accelerated dynamics of states on the Bloch sphere exceeding all known quantum speed limits of state evolution; and (ii) quantum trajectory of states lie on a great circle (geodesic path) on the Bloch sphere at all times. We demonstrate that such extreme temporal correlation of TLS can be simulated in realistic system by embedding the TLS into a higher dimensional Hilbert space such that the composite system obeys unitary dynamics. Specifically we show that a four dimensional embedding of non-Hermitian PT- symmetric TLS is enough to host K 3 → 3 limit. We also discuss the effect of random noise on our results. Finally we conclude with a comparative study of our results with existing experimental realization of embedding.

Husimi Dynamics Generated by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Katherine Holmes, Wasim Rehman, Simon Malzard +1 more

The dynamics generated by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are often less intuitive than those of conventional Hermitian systems. Even for models as simple as a complexified harmonic oscillator, the dynamics for generic initial states shows surprising features. Here we analyze the dynamics of the Husimi distribution in a semiclassical limit, illuminating the foundations of the full quantum evolution. The classical Husimi evolution is composed of two factors: (i) the initial Husimi distribution evaluated along phase-space trajectories and (ii) the final value of the norm corresponding to each phase-space point. Both factors conspire to lead to intriguing dynamical behaviors. We demonstrate how the full quantum dynamics unfolds on top of the classical Husimi dynamics for two instructive examples.
