Propagation of thermal light through a dispersive medium

Abstract

Although an electromagnetic pulse traveling through a dispersive medium gradually spreads out, it is shown that for a stationary thermal field all multipoint correlation functions of any order remain unchanged as the field propagates, provided that the refractive index is real.

From refractive index to stopped light

Jarosław Zaremba

Investigations of controlled modifications of dispersive properties of atomic media and of propagation of short laser pulses have recently become a dynamically developing field of theoretical and experimental researches. In this lecture a brief overview is presented of basic physical phenomena underlying modifications of a group velocity of a pulse propagating in an optically modified medium. In particular, the possibilities of slowing down this velocity to zero and of retrieving the stopped pulse are discussed.

Light Propagation in Temporally Disordered Media

Yonatan Sharabi, Eran Lustig, Moti Segev

We study light propagation in a medium with a homogeneous refractive index that varies randomly in time. We find that, in stark contrast to spatial disorder, temporal disorder causes exponential increase of the light intensity.

Photons traveling at the speed of light in a two-level atomic medium as a source of Cherenkov radiation cones

V. E. Ogluzdin

On speed of a photon in a dispersing medium Ogluzdin Valeriy E. Abstract Based on the author of the experimental results and their treatment, a model that demonstrates that the real dispersive medium in spectral regions where the refractive index greater than unity, the velocity of propagation of photons in this environment corresponds to the phase velocity of light. These portions of the spectrum (for example, atomic potassium vapor or other alkali metal) are from low-frequency side of the main lines of the doublet and are available for research using tunable lasers. In the calculations took into account the fact that the atomic vapor of alkali metal used as a dispersing medium, in accordance with the theory of dispersion in the above sections of the spectrum, on the periphery of the cross section of laser beam with Gaussian intensity distribution across the beam - in the shadows refractive index n (ν) is greater than unity, and the axis of the beam, where the radiation intensity is maximum - for radiation following the leading edge of the light pulse, the refractive index is unity, which ensures smooth on the beam axis, without any delay "superluminal "propagation of light with velocity c. This fact causes the appearance of the shadow cone of Vavilov - Cherenkov radiation, indicating a slow propagation of photons from the source of the cone with phase velocity c / n (ν).

Causality in propagation of a pulse in a nonlinear dispersive medium

G. S. Agarwal, Tarak Nath Dey

We investigate the causal propagation of the pulse through dispersive media by very precise numerical solution of the coupled Maxwell–Bloch equations without any approximations about the strength of the input field. We study full nonlinear behaviour of the pulse propagation through solid state media like ruby and alexandrite. We have demonstrated that the information carried by the discontinuity, i.e. front of the pulse, moves inside the media with velocity c even though the peak of the pulse can travel either with sub-luminal or with super-luminal velocity. Our numerical demonstration is subject to the condition that the background refractive index of the medium is unity. We extend the argument of Levi-Civita to prove that the discontinuity would travel with velocity c even in a nonlinear medium.

Thermal light cannot be represented as a statistical mixture of pulses

Aurélia Chenu, Agata M. Brańczyk, John E. Sipe

Can thermal light be represented by a mixture of single pulses? It cannot; only a modified mixture can yield the correct first-order correlation function at equal space-points. Still, this fails to reproduce higher orders.
