Abstract

Using the resolution of identity spanned by coherent states of the harmonic oscillator, any entire function of the creation and the annihilation operators and its action on a vector in Hilbert space can be defined directly and simply. We show that such a direct approach applied to non-entire functions and , present in the literature, may lead to errors and contradictions. We elucidate their roots and propose a way to avoid them. We discuss the obtained results.

Non-entire Functions of Creation and Annihilation Operators and Their Relation to Phase Operator

M Davidović, D. Arsenović, Dragomir M Davidović

On the coherent states |α⟩ any entire function of creation and annihilation operators may be defined. We show that it is not the case for non-entire functions. Use of |α⟩⟨α| as identity operator for a non-entire function may lead to contradictory results. On the example of the phase operator we show how these possible contradictions may be avoided.

Hilbert spaces of analytic functions and generalized coherent states

M. Arık, Darryl D. Coon

Generalized coherent states which are associated with a generalization of the harmonic oscillator commutation relation are investigated. It is shown that these states form an overcomplete basis in a Hilbert space of analytic functions. The generalized creation and annihilation operators are bounded except in a limit in which they reduce to the usual boson creation and annihilation operators. In this limit the Hilbert space of analytic functions reduces to the Bargmann–Segal Hilbert space of entire functions and in another limit it reduces to the Hardy–Lebesgue space.

Elementary derivation of the quantum propagator for the harmonic oscillator

Jiushu Shao

Operator algebra techniques are employed to derive the quantum evolution operator for the harmonic oscillator. The derivation begins with the construction of the annihilation and creation operators and the determination of the wave function for the coherent state as well as its time-dependent evolution, and ends with the transformation of the propagator in a mixed position-coherent-state representation to the desired one in configuration space. Throughout the entire procedure, besides elementary operator manipulations, it is only necessary to solve linear differential equations and to calculate Gaussian integrals.

Coherent states

J. C. Garrison, R. Y. Chiao

The elementary quantum theory of quasi-classical states for mechanical harmonic oscillators is applied to the radiation oscillators describing light, and thus used to define quasi-classical states of light. These states are called “coherent”, because the expectation value of any normally ordered product of creation and annihilation operators factorizes for them. A theoretical discussion of possible sources for coherent states is followed by experimental evidence for their existence. The mathematical properties of coherent states, e.g., nonorthogonality and overcompleteness, are explained in order to use them to represent states and operators. These representations provide a suitable replacement for the classical phase space description of light, which is forbidden by the uncertainty principle. The quantum phase space approach leads to the definition of the Wigner distribution, the Q-function, the P-function, and Gaussian mixed states.

Some New Operator Identities in Two-mode Fock Space

井思聪, 范洪义

Two-mode Fock space, as a Hilbert space spanned by two-mode occupation number state vectors, is widely used in quantum mechanics and quantum optics. In this work we derive some new operator identifies in this space which can help us to prove a completeness relation in the two-mode Fock space. Let a(a~+) and b(b~+) be annihilation (creation) operators of two-mode harmonic

New Creation and Annihilation Operators in Phase Space

A. D. Jannussis, N. Patargias, G. N. Brodimas

New creation and annihilation operators of the harmonic oscillator in the phase space are considered. The common base of these operators is a generalized Wigner distribution and their coherent states are determined. Using these operators Weyl's displacement operators and Bopp's translation operators are also determined.
