Master equations for degenerate systems: electron radiative cascade in a Coulomb potential

Abstract

We examine the effects of degeneracy and its lifting for the problem of electron radiative cascade, described by master equations of the Lindblad form (quantum optical master equations). A weak external field approximation is used to study the resulting gradual transformation of cascade dynamics between degenerate and non-degenerate forms. Exploiting the spherical symmetry properties of the system we demonstrate significant difference between perturbations commuting with angular momentum and perturbations breaking the spherical symmetry, such as a homogeneous external field. We discuss the possibility and the general approach for reduction of the Lindblad master equations in the case of spectral degeneracy to the Pauli balance equations. This determines the appropriate choice of basis as, for example, spherical or parabolic.

Unified Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan quantum master equation beyond the secular approximation

Anton Sergeevich Trushechkin

Derivation of a quantum master equation for a system weakly coupled to a bath which takes into account nonsecular effects, but nevertheless has the mathematically correct Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan form (in particular, it preserves positivity of the density operator) and also satisfies the standard thermodynamic properties is a known long-standing problem in theory of open quantum systems. The nonsecular terms are important when some energy levels of the system or their differences (Bohr frequencies) are nearly degenerate. We provide a fully rigorous derivation of such equation based on a formalization of the weak-coupling limit for the general case.

Interactions of quantum systems with pulses of quantized radiation: From a cascaded master equation to a traveling mode perspective

Victor Rueskov Christiansen, Alexander Holm Kiilerich, Klaus Mølmer

The interaction of a propagating pulse of quantum radiation with a localized quantum system can be described by a cascaded master equation with a distinct initially populated input and a finally populated output field mode [Kiilerich and M\o{}lmer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 123604 (2019)]. By transformation to an appropriate interaction picture, we break the cascaded nature of the master equation and recover an effective time-dependent interaction with a lossless single mode and a supplementary lossy mode. The former closely represents the traveling pulse, while the latter constitutes a non-Markovian component in the exchange of quanta between the scatterer and the quantized field. The transformed master equation offers important insights into the system dynamics, and it permits numerically efficient solutions.

Lindblad equation for the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime

Daniel Holst, Patrick Potts, Peter Samuelsson

We derive a quantum master equation in Lindblad form for the open quantum Rabi model in the perturbative deep strong coupling regime, where the spectrum is close to degenerate and harmonic. The Lindblad form is obtained by combining secular and singular-coupling approximations, working in a Schrieffer-Wolff transformed frame. We benchmark our equation against a Bloch-Redfield one, analyzing the time-evolution and steady state properties of several observables and find excellent agreement. Analytical results are obtained in limiting cases.

Level-degeneracy effects in super-radiance theory. Calculations for j=12 to j′=12 dipole transition

A. Crubellier, Marie-Gabrielle Schweighofer

We study here level-degeneracy effects in super-radiance, using the quantum "small-system" model whose interest and limitations are discussed. First, we show that this model allows one to understand the physical origin of these effects and to describe their qualitative influence on the properties of the emitted light. We also present and analyze numerical results obtained for the case of a dipole transition between two degenerate levels of angular momenta \textonehalf{}. We show that in this particular case one can define a basis of collective states which is well adapted to the invariance properties of the master equation. It is then possible to solve the master equation and to compute expectation values for the radiated field (intensity radiated with a given polarization, quantum fluctuations of this intensity) for various initial conditions and for small but already significant values of the number of individual systems. A detailed analysis of these results and a comparison with analogous calculations in the case where the degeneracy is supposed to be removed allows us to estimate the individual influence of the different types of effects (interference effects and the two sorts of competition effects, inhibition and initiation). We also compare the total intensity radiated to the intensity radiated by the same number of two (nondegenerate) level atoms. This comparison can be simply understood if one studies the partition of the population of the collective energy levels between the different states of these levels, and it appears that the most populated states are these which are able to radiate the most. Finally, it is shown how level degeneracy affects the quantum fluctuations of the intensity.

OPEN QUANTUM SYSTEMS

Аурелиан Исар, A. Sãndulescu, Horia Scutaru +2 more

The damping of the harmonic oscillator is studied in the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems. A generalization of the fundamental constraints on quantum mechanical diffusion coefficients which appear in the master equation for the damped quantum oscillator is presented; the Schrödinger, Heisenberg and Weyl-Wigner-Moyal representations of the Lindblad equation are given explicitly. On the basis of these representations it is shown that various master equations for the damped quantum oscillator used in the literature are particular cases of the Lindblad equation and that not all of these equations are satisfying the constraints on quantum mechanical diffusion coefficients. Analytical expressions for the first two moments of coordinate and momentum are obtained by using the characteristic function of the Lindblad master equation. The master equation is transformed into Fokker-Planck equations for quasiprobability distributions and a comparative study is made for the Glauber P representation, the antinormal ordering Q representation, and the Wigner W representation. The density matrix is represented via a generating function, which is obtained by solving a timedependent linear partial differential equation derived from the master equation. Illustrative examples for specific initial conditions of the density matrix are provided. The solution of the master equation in the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal representation is of Gaussian type if the initial form of the Wigner function is taken to be a Gaussian corresponding (for example) to a coherent wavefunction. The damped harmonic oscillator is applied for the description of the charge equilibration mode observed in deep inelastic reactions. For a system consisting of two harmonic oscillators the time dependence of expectation values, Wigner function and Weyl operator, are obtained and discussed. In addition models for the damping of the angular momentum are studied. Using this theory to the quantum tunneling through the nuclear barrier, besides Gamow’s transitions with energy conservation, additional transitions with energy loss are found. The tunneling spectrum is obtained as a function of the barrier characteristics. When this theory is used to the resonant atom-field interaction, new optical equations describing the coupling through the environment of the atomic observables are obtained. With these equations, some characteristics of the laser radiation absorption spectrum and optical bistability are described.
