Laser-induced collisional autoionization in europium and strontium atoms

Abstract

An experiment that involves laser-induced collisional autoionization in europium and strontium atoms is proposed and the spectral line shape of the cross section is calculated on the basis of data available in the literature. The feasibility of the experiment both in oven cells and in a crossed-atomic-beam geometry is discussed.

Laser-Induced Collisional Energy Transfer: High-Accuracy Measurement of the Spectral Line Shape in Weak-Field Regime

Lorenzo Fini, Roberto Buffa, Riccardo Pratesi +3 more

In this paper we report the measurement of the spectral line shape for the laser-induced collisional energy transfer reaction between europium and strontium atoms. Cross-sections were measured in a frequency range of 70 cm –1 . Comparison with numerical results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation shows good agreement over the full line shape.

High-resolution studies on laser-induced collisional-energy-transfer profiles

Catherine Bréchignac, Ph. Cahuzac, P. E. Toschek

High-resolution spectra of laser-induced collisional energy transfer between europium and strontium are obtained for collisional interactions which are dipole-dipole in nature. A universal profile is found for this laser-induced excitation. For the first time a precise comparison with available calculations is possible. The line core agrees well with a theory assuming a dipole-dipole coupling, but the quasistatic wing deviates from the asymptotic behavior expected for a pure dipole-dipole interaction.

Far-wing study of laser-induced collisional energy transfer

M. Matera, Marina Mazzoni, Roberto Buffa +2 more

An experimental study of laser-induced collisional energy transfer in a mixture of europium and strontium vapors is reported. The profile of the excitation spectrum in the static wing has been measured with high accuracy and compared with available calculations, demonstrating that simple two-level models are inadequate to describe the transfer process. A comparison with the predictions of a three-level model assuming dipole-dipole interaction, recently developed by Bambini and Berman, shows for the first time agreement between theory and experiment.

Observation of laser-induced collisional two-photon ionisation in a strontium-caesium mixture

Catherine Bréchignac, Ph. Cahuzac, Anne Débarre

Laser-induced collisional ionisation of caesium is observed in a strontium-caesium vapour mixture. In their initial state both atomic species are in the ground level. The ionisation of caesium is achieved when the system is illuminated by an intense laser light, the frequency of which is tuned across the resonance line of strontium. The process involves photoabsorption during the collisional interaction. It is monitored by the observation of optical fluorescence after Cs + , e - recombination. The laser-induced collisional ionisation profile, i.e. the variation of the ionisation yield against the laser wavelength is recorded under various experimental conditions.

Laser-induced autoionizing and continuum structures: Line-shape study in the presence of continuum-continuum transitions

Stefano Cavalieri, R. Eramo, Roberto Buffa +1 more

We present a theoretical study of laser-induced autoionization and laser-induced continuum structures, performed with the aim of deriving predictions on the effect of continuum-continuum transitions on the resonance line shape. The model, developed as an extension of models introduced for the description of laser-induced autoionization and laser-induced continuum structures, on one hand, and for above-threshold ionization, on the other hand, provides quantitative predictions. For specific atomic systems, the line shapes of the structures are shown not to be affected by continuum-continuum transitions, in contrast with previously reported results.

Laser-induced effects for overlapping autoinoizing rydberg states of xenon

Alexei N. Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Alexandr I. Magunov +1 more

The effect of a laser field on the cross section of photoionization of an atom by probe radiation in the region of closely lying autoionizing resonances is studied theoretically. The cross sections in the region of the overlapping autoionizing Rydberg states 5p 5(2 P 1/2)6d′ J = 1 and 5p 5(2 P 1/2)8s′ J = 1 resonantly coupled with the discrete state 5p 5(2 P 3/2)7p[1/2]1 in the xenon atom are calculated. The behavior of the shape and position of resonances in relation to the frequency and intensity of laser radiation is studied.
