High-resolution studies on laser-induced collisional-energy-transfer profiles

Abstract

High-resolution spectra of laser-induced collisional energy transfer between europium and strontium are obtained for collisional interactions which are dipole-dipole in nature. A universal profile is found for this laser-induced excitation. For the first time a precise comparison with available calculations is possible. The line core agrees well with a theory assuming a dipole-dipole coupling, but the quasistatic wing deviates from the asymptotic behavior expected for a pure dipole-dipole interaction.

An experimental study of laser-induced collisional energy transfer in a mixture of europium and strontium vapors is reported. The profile of the excitation spectrum in the static wing has been measured with high accuracy and compared with available calculations, demonstrating that simple two-level models are inadequate to describe the transfer process. A comparison with the predictions of a three-level model assuming dipole-dipole interaction, recently developed by Bambini and Berman, shows for the first time agreement between theory and experiment.

LASER INDUCED COLLISIONAL ENERGY TRANSFER : HIGH RESOLUTION STUDIES AND COHERENCE EFFECTS IN DIPOLE-DIPOLE INTERACTION

Catherine Bréchignac, Ph. Cahuzac, Anne Débarre

Two complementary methods have been used to investigate light induced collisional energy transfers for a dipole-dipole interaction. A high resolution spectral profile study in a Na-Ca mixture has confirmed the assumption of a universal profile for a given interaction, the measurement of polarization ratios in a Eu-Sr mixture has confirmed the assumption that such processes may partially preserve the coherences induced by an external polarized field.

High-resolution study of light-induced collisional energy transfer in Na-Ca mixture

Anne Débarre

The experimental study of a laser-induced energy transfer for a dipole-dipole collisional interaction in a Na-Ca mixture is reported. A specific excitation scheme is used in this experiment for which the virtual level is optically excited. A comparison with the case of a dipole-dipole interaction in the Eu-Sr mixture where the virtual level is excited by collisional energy transfer is presented.

Laser-induced collisional energy transfer: Experimental study of the spectral profile

M. Matera, Marina Mazzoni, Marco Bianconi +2 more

We report a measurement of the excitation spectrum of the laser-induced collisional energy transfer process for the Eu-Sr system in the weak-field regime. The measurement has been performed in a detuning range extending up to 85 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ in the static wing, providing a wider check of existing theoretical models. The frequency resolution of the measurement (0.1 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$) was suitable for a quantitative study of the core of the line spectrum, where a comparison with the results of numerical calculations based on an effective three-level model gives complete evidence for a cooperative decay from the Sr(5${\mathit{p}}^{2}$${)}^{1}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$ final level.

Calculations on laser-induced collisional energy transfer

S. Geltman

We examine theoretically the behavior of cross sections for laser-induced collisional energy transfer (LICET) over a wide range of detunings and laser intensities for the two-atom pairs Li-Sr and Eu-Sr which have been previously studied experimentally. These two cases are complementary in that the laser and collisional interactions enter in opposite orders, and their level structures are such as to give weak-field line shapes of opposite asymmetry and intensity shift. A three-state model is used and the Bambini-Berman formula for the weak-field quasistatic wing is verified. At high intensities the peak cross section is found to go through a maximum and the LICET profile is found to become symmetric about a shifted center with notable departures from a uniform falloff in the far quasistatic wing, apparently arising from radiative collisional interference effects.

Observation of Two Quasi-Static Wings of Laser-Induced Collision Energy Transfer

We investigate experimentally laser-induced collision energy transfer for transitions both from Eu(6s6p) 8 P 9/2 to Sr(5s10s) 1 S 0 and from Eu(6s6p) 8 - P 7/2 to Sr(5s8d) 1 D 2 . Two quasi-static wings are observed in their excited function spectra. By using two dipole-dipole interactions, a spectral line from numerical calculation is consistent with the experimental line in two quasi-static wings.
