Abstract

We investigate wavefront engineering of photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down conversion in lithium niobate-based nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs). Due to the complexity of domain structures, it is more convenient to describe photon interaction based on the nonlinear Huygens-Fresnel principle than conventional quasiphase matching regime. Analytical expressions are obtained to describe the transverse properties of down-converted photon states. The convenience of domain engineering in LiNbO3crystals provides a potential platform for flexible wavefront manipulation of multiphoton states. The generation of N00N state with orbital angular momentum in a twisted NPC is studied utilizing this method. The obtained state is of great value in quantum cryptography, metrology, and lithography applications.

Manipulating the orbital-angular-momentum correlation of entangled two-photon states in three-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals

Chuan Xu, Songtao Huang, Qian Yu +5 more

Three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) has recently been realized in experiment, which provides a powerful platform for quantum-state engineering. Here, we propose a fork-grating 3D NPC scheme to manipulate orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) correlations of entangled two-photon pairs. The spiral spectra, bandwidths, and generation rates of counterpropagating and copropagating photon pairs are theoretically analyzed. Our results show that 3D NPC is of practical significance to generate high-dimensional OAM entanglement for quantum precision measurement, quantum computing, and quantum communication.

Manipulating Orbital Angular Momentum Entanglement in Three-Dimensional Spiral Nonlinear Photonic Crystals

Qian Yu, Chuan Xu, Sixin Chen +6 more

We propose and theoretically investigate two-photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) correlation through spontaneous parameter down-conversion (SPDC) processes in three-dimensional (3D) spiral nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs). By properly designing the NPC structure, one can feasibly modulate the OAM-correlated photon pair, which provides a potential platform to realize high-dimensional entanglement for quantum information processing and quantum communications.

Spontaneous parametric downconversion in a laser-poled lithium niobate nonlinear photonic crystal with nanoscale resolution

Xinzhe Yang, Qian Yu, Xiaoyi Xu +5 more

Based on quasi-phase-matching (QPM) theory, nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) are capable of realizing efficient spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) for the generation of photonic entangled states. However, the traditional electric field poling techniques employed in NPC fabrication often result in non-negligible processing errors of a few hundred nanometers, thus impeding the production of quantum photon pairs as intended. In this work, we investigate the SPDC photon pairs generated in a laser-poled lithium niobate (LN) NPC. By using the recently developed laser poling technique, the processing error of the NPC is substantially reduced to approximately 15 nm. Consequently, the coincidence counts of the generated photon pairs in the experiment reach 83.6% of the designed value. Our result paves the way for on-demand production of high-quality quantum sources, which has potential applications in quantum communications and quantum computations.

Coherent manipulation of a three-dimensional maximally entangled state

Shi-Long Liu, Zhi‐Yuan Zhou, Shi-Kai Liu +7 more

Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good controllability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using postselection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spectrum of down-converted photon pairs by engineering the input pump beam. In addition, the relative phase between spatially entangled photon pairs can be easily manipulated by preparing the relative phase of input pump states.

Photonic Entanglement Based on Nonlinear Metamaterials

Yang Ming, Wang Zhang, Jie Ying Tang +4 more

Abstract Metamaterials consisting of deep subwavelength artificial “atoms” have been utilized to demonstrate a series of novel phenomena such as negative refraction and epsilon‐near‐zero. In recent times, metamaterials have been developed as an up‐and‐coming platform for quantum optics. Here the generation and modulation of photonic entanglement are investigated based on the parametric down conversion processes in metamaterials with considerable optical nonlinearity. Through flexible nanostructure design, the nonlinear photonic interaction in the metamaterial system can be effectively tailored. The distributions of optical parameters of the system are inhomogeneous, based on which the spatial properties of the generated photonic state can be steered as desired. The theoretical framework to describe this system is established based on the nonlinear Huygens–Fresnel principle, and a differential approach is utilized to deal with the intrinsic loss of the system. The generation of orbital angular momentum entangled states is actually considered as an illustration. This platform could be valuable for the practical applications of quantum information processing.

Emission of orbital-angular-momentum-entangled photon pairs in a nonlinear ring fiber utilizing spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Dalibor Javůrek, Jiŕí Svozilík, Jan Peřina

We suggest the generation of photon pairs in a thermally induced nonlinear periodically poled silica fiber by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Photons are generated directly in eigenstates of optical angular momentum. Photons in a pair can be entangled in these states as well as in frequencies. We identify suitable spatial and polarization modes giving an efficient nonlinear interaction. By changing the pump field properties both narrow- and broadband down-converted fields can be obtained.
