Spontaneous emission from an exciton in a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity

Abstract

Abstract Spontaneous emission properties of a quantum dot embedded in a semiconductor microcavity are theoretically investigated. High Q value of the cavity yields both weak and strong coupling states, the former of which is mainly focused. There, spontaneous emission spectrum has doublet shape, which is caused by a quantum interference. This interference is robust against detuning between the excitation of the quantum dot and cavity mode. The time domain analysis is performed for further characterization of the high Q weak coupling state. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Spontaneous emission properties of a quantum dot in an ultrahigh- Q cavity: Crossover from weak- to strong-coupling states and robust quantum interference

Jun-ichi Inoue, Tetsuyuki Ochiai, Kazuaki Sakoda

We theoretically discuss spontaneous emission properties of a quantum dot embedded in an ultrahigh-$Q$ microcavity, where a detuning between an excitation in the quantum dot and the cavity mode is taken into account. Both weak- and strong-coupling states are obtained under the ultrahigh-$Q$ condition. In the high-$Q$ weak-coupling case, the spontaneous emission spectrum shows a sharp dip, whose origin is a quantum interference. In the strong-coupling case, there is a region where both the Rabi splitting and the quantum interference contribute on an equal footing, referred to as a crossover region, where the spontaneous emission spectral shape is quite similar to that of the high-$Q$ weak-coupling state. The quantum interference is robust against the detuning.

Emission Spectra from a High Q Weak Coupling System

Jun‐ichi Inoue, Tetsuyuki Ochiai, Kazuaki Sakoda

Spontaneous emission spectra from a single quantum dot embedded in a microcavity characterized by the quality factor ( Q ) are theoretically discussed in the high Q weak coupling region. It is shown that the region should be divided into two subregions in terms of the spectral shape. The spontaneous emission spectrum in one subregion has the Lorentzian line shape, which shows a cavity effect in the line width characterized by Q -1 dependence. In the other subregion, the spectral line shape is found to have a "doublet" structure, although it is in the weak coupling region. This doublet is caused by a quantum interference effect.

Entangled‐photon generation from a quantum dot in cavity QED

Hiroshi Ajiki, Hajime Ishihara

Abstract We theoretically study polarization‐entangled photon generation from a single quantum dot in a microcavity. Entangled‐photon pairs with singlet or triplet Bell states are generated in the resonant‐hyperparametric scattering via dressed states in the cavity QED. Although co‐polarized non‐entangled photons are also generated, the generation is dramatically suppressed in the strong‐coupling limit owing to the photon blockade effect. Finite binding energy of biexciton is also important for the generation of photon pairs with high degree of entanglement. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Dynamics of the excitations of a quantum dot in a microcavity

J. I. Perea, Diego Porras, C. Tejedor

We study the dynamics of a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional microcavity in the strong coupling regime in which the quantum dot exciton has an energy close to the frequency of a confined cavity mode. Under the continuous pumping of the system, the confined electron and hole can recombine either by spontaneous emission through a leaky mode or by stimulated emission of a cavity mode that can escape from the cavity. The numerical integration of a master equation including all these effects gives the dynamics of the density matrix. By using the quantum regression theorem, we compute the first- and second-order coherence functions required to calculate the photon statistics and the spectrum of the emitted light. Our main result is the determination of a range of parameters in which a state of cavity modes with Poissonian or sub-Poissonian (nonclassical) statistics can be built up within the microcavity. Depending on the relative values of pumping and rate of stimulated emission, either one or two peaks close to the excitation energy of the dot and/or to the natural frequency of the cavity are observed in the emission spectrum. The physics behind these results is discussed.

Theoretical analysis of light emission from a coupled system of a photonic nanocavity and a quantum dot

Makoto Yamaguchi, Takashi Asano, Masayuki Fujita +1 more

Abstract This report quantum mechanically analyses a system composed of a two‐level system, a single mode cavity, and free space photon modes, which are coupled to each other. The analytical solution in the intermediate regime between the strong and weak coupling regimes is successfully obtained. It is found that the emission rate reaches its maximum when the cavity photon lifetime τcav satisfy 1/τcav = 4|g |, where 2|g | is the vacuum Rabi frequency. Also, Fano resonance is shown to occur under certain conditions. These results can be useful for high‐speed single photon sources and for fundamental understanding of the interaction between a quantum dot and a cavity mode. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Multiplets in the optical emission spectra of Dicke states of quantum dots excitons coupled to microcavity photons

Fabrice P. Laussy, Михаил Михайлович Глазов, Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin +1 more

We present an overview of the model we developed (F. P. Laussy et al., cond-mat/0505728 [1]) to describe strong coupling of light with excitons hosted by large quantum dots, where the number of excitons is eventually limited by Pauli blocking of the underlying electron-hole structure. We apply it to a limiting case not investigated before, where excitations are created in states analogous of Dicke states describing non-interacting distinguishable fermionic excitations coupled through the radiation field. The multiplet structures in the optical emission spectra which we obtain show, by comparison with our previous results, that they remain essentially the same independently of the model for small saturation numbers, while they acquire specificities of their own when the number of allowed excitons becomes large.
