THE OPTICAL STARK EFFECT OF THE EXCITON DUE TO DYNAMICAL COUPLING BETWEEN QUANTIZED STATES OF THE ELECTRON AND HOLE IN QUANTUM WELLS

Abstract

Optical Stark effect of the exciton in quantum wells is treated by taking into account not only dynamical coupling by pump field between quantized states of the electron in the conduction band but also the coupling between quantized states of the hole in the valence band. The changes in the calculated one-photon absorption probability by exciton depend essentially on pump field detuning.

Optical Stark Shift of Bound Excitons with Quantized Radiation Field

T. Altevogt, H. Puff, R. Zimmermann

We theoretically analyze a pump–probe experiment to detect the optical Stark effect on impurity-bound excitons taking the quantization of the pump field into account. A density matrix approach allows the calculation of the probe absorption spectra with high accuracy. For bound excitons with low inhomogeneous broadening of several tens of μeV, the photon statistics of the pump field has a considerable influence on the lineshape of the Stark-shifted resonance. The effect should be clearly observable for broad photon number distributions and low pump detuning.

Polarisation effects of the dynamical Stark effect of excitons in quantum wells

J Schlosser, Á. Stáhl, I. Balslev

The authors study the polarisation properties of the dynamical Stark effect of excitons in semiconductor quantum wells. They start from a four-band density matrix theory involving the heavy- and light-hole band and the two lowest conduction subbands. The set of equations of motion contains the dynamics relevant for both Frohlich-type experiments (pumping with a carbon dioxide laser) and the case of pumping a few exciton rydbergs below the exciton line. The authors perform the relevant projections based on excitonic eigenstates and study the resulting 'few-level' systems. From this they calculate the change in the susceptibility tensor with respect to a weak probe beam caused by a pump beam with specified polarisation and frequency.

Optical exciton Stark effect and quantum beats at exciton quasienergy levels in quantum wells

A. I. Bobrysheva, M. I. Shmiglyuk, V. G. Pavlov

The optical Stark effect and quantum beats in a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well are investigated theoretically for the case when the first two electron size-quantization levels are mixed dynamically by a high-intensity CO 2 laser pulse polarized perpendicular to the plane of the quantum well. The quasienergy spectrum of heavy-hole excitons and the ratio between the probabilities of exciton transition with and without a strong electromagnetic field are obtained. The time-dependent intensity of absorption of the sensing light is determined. It exhibits quantum beats at twice the electron Rabi frequency.

A theoretical study of the optical Stark effect in InGaAs/InAlAs quantum dots

Abstract In this paper, we examine the three-level optical Stark effect of excitons in InGaAs/InAlAs quantum dots using renormalized wavefunction formulation. The system was assumed to be irradiated by two lasers in which a strong laser dynamically couples electron-quantized levels, while a weaker laser probes interband absorption. Our results show that, in the presence of the resonant strong laser, two new absorption peaks of excitons appear in the absorption spectrum as a clear indication of the effect. In addition, we propose that the formation of the effect in low-dimensional structures could have connection to the splitting of electron levels. Furthermore, we seek to explain the essential dependence of the amplitude and position of two peaks on pump field detuning.

Biexciton optical Stark effect due to dynamical coupling of excitons and biexcitons

A. I. Bobrysheva, M. I. Shmiglyuk, S. S. Russu

The biexciton optical Stark-effect under resonant pumping between the exciton and biexciton levels is studied theoretically. The probabilities of biexciton two-photon absorption of a weak probe light and of one-photon biexciton-exciton transition are calculated. The optical Stark splitting manifests itself in two-photon biexciton absorption through two absorption peaks spaced 2 (Omega) apart. Omega is the Raby frequency. In the luminescence spectrum due to biexciton-exciton one-photon transition three luminescence maxima appear which are shifted with respect to the luminescence maximum in the case without pumping.
