Abstract

In this paper, using the general master equation in the dipole interaction and the rotating-wave approximation, we will explain the experimental results obtained by Warsaw Group for Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in four-level lambda scheme of cold rubidium atoms. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Nonlinear wave mixing with electromagnetically induced transparency in cold atoms

Hoonsoo Kang, Gessler Hernandez, Yifu Zhu

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a four-level atomic system suppresses linear absorption and leads to resonantly enhanced slow-light four-wave mixing at low light intensities. We analyse the backward four-wave mixing in the four-level system under the EIT conditions, derive the four-wave-mixing efficiency and discuss slow-light propagation conditions. We present experimental measurements of resonant four-wave mixing with the backward scheme in cold Rb atoms and compare the experimental results with the theoretical calculations.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption cross-over with a four-level Rydberg system

Yağız Oyun, Özgür Çakır, S. Sevinçli

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) are quantum coherence phenomena which result from the interference of excitation pathways. Combining these with Rydberg atoms have opened up many possibilities for various applications. We introduce a theoretical model to study Rydberg-EIT and Rydberg-EIA effects in cold Cs and Rb atomic ensembles in a four-level ladder type scheme taking into account van der Waals type interactions between the atoms. The proposed many-body method for analysis of such systems involves a self-consistent mean field approach and it produces results which display a very good agreement with recent experiments. Our calculations also successfully demonstrate experimentally observed EIT-EIA cross-over in the Rb case. Being able to simulate the interaction effects in such systems has significant importance, especially for controlling the optical response of these.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in the Five-level Scheme of Cold \(^{85}\)Rb Atomic Vapour

Bui Thi Hong Hai, Le Van Doai, Doan Hoai Son +5 more

In the framework of the semiclassical theory, we develop an analytical approach on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the medium consists of five-level cascade scheme of cold 85Rb atoms. In the weak field limit of the probe light, an analytical representation of EIT spectra is derived for the first time. Signatures of EIT spectra, including transparency efficiency, have been investigated. We see a tremendous agreement between our theoretical results and experimental observations.

In the initial part of the paper, the principles of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in basic three-level schemes are sketched, and some applications of this phenomenon are described.Next a presentation follows of a five-level EIT model of Bloch equations, which was developed to reconstruct multipeak cascade-EIT spectra registered in a sample of cold 85 Rb atoms in MOT.The respective experiment is also described. The achieved good agreement between theory and performed experiment is documented and discussed.

Effect of four-wave mixing on electromagnetically induced transparency in -type system with a two-photon probe field

Yanliang Zhang, Jiang Li, Zhenrong Sun +2 more

Using density matrix equation, we calculate analytically as well as numerically the effect of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the rubidium 5S1/2-5P3/2-5D5/2 Λ-type system with a two-photon probe field. The calculated results are in good agreement with Fulton's experimental results in 1995 Phys. Rev. A 52 2302.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold rubidium atoms

Min Yan, Edward G. Rickey, Yifu Zhu

We report experimental studies of electromagnetically induced transparency in Λ-type and ladder-type atomic systems realized in 87Rb atoms cooled and confined in a magneto-optical trap. Complete transparency is observed in the Λ-type system with a moderate coupling field. Comparison between the two systems reveals that at the line center of a weak probe transition, destructive interference occurs for the Λ-type system, whereas constructive interference occurs for the ladder-type system. We discuss conditions of complete transparency in the Λ-type system that contains hyperfine magnetic sublevels. Our experimental measurements for the two systems agree with theoretical calculations based on simple three-level Λ-type and ladder-type models.
