Time-invariant discord in dynamically decoupled systems

Carole Addis, Göktuğ Karpat, Sabrina Maniscalco

Dynamical decoupling protocols are one of the most used tools for efficient quantum error corrections and for reservoir engineering. In this paper we study the effect of dynamical decoupling pulses on the preservation of both quantum and classical correlations, and their influence on the intriguing phenomenon of time-invariant discord. We study two qubits experiencing local dephasing with an Ohmic class spectrum and subject to dynamical decoupling protocols. We investigate the connection between the dynamics of both classical and quantum correlations and the behavior of information flow between system and environment. Finally, we establish a set of necessary conditions for which time-invariant discord can be created using dynamically decoupling techniques.

Performance of deterministic dynamical decoupling schemes: Concatenated and periodic pulse sequences

Kaveh Khodjasteh, Daniel A. Lidar

Dynamical decoupling can be used to preserve arbitrary quantum states despite undesired interactions with the environment, using control Hamiltonians affecting the system only. We present a system-independent analysis of dynamical decoupling based on leading order decoupling error estimates, valid for bounded-strength environments. Using as a key tool a renormalization transformation of the effective system-bath coupling Hamiltonian, we delineate the reliability domain of dynamical decoupling used for quantum state preservation, in a general setting for a single qubit. We specifically analyze and compare two deterministic dynamical decoupling schemes---periodic and concatenated---and distinguish between two limiting cases of fast versus slow environments. We prove that concatenated decoupling outperforms periodic decoupling over a wide range of parameters. These results are obtained for both ``ideal'' (zero-width) and realistic (finite-width) pulses This work extends and generalizes our earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 180501 (2005)].

Dynamical decoupling with initial system-environment correlations

Juju Hu, Qiang Ke, Yinghua Ji

Dynamical decoupling (DD) technique is one of the most successful methods to suppress decoherence in qubit systems. In this paper, we studied a solvable pure dephasing model and investigated how DD sequences and initial correlations affect this system. We gave the analytical expressions of decoherence functions and compared the decoherence suppression effects of DD pulses in Ohmic, sub-Ohmic and super-Ohmic environments. Our results show that (1) The initial system-environment correlation will cause additional decoherence. In order to control the dynamic process of open quantum system more accurately and effectively, the initial correlation between the system and reservoir must be considered. (2) High frequency DD pulses can significantly reduce the amplitude of the decoherence function even in the presence of initial system-environment correlations.
