Abstract

We propose a method of suppressing the relative intensity noise caused by polarization-dependent gain that is inherent to Raman polarizers (RPs). This method involves bit-synchronously scrambling the state of polarization of a pulse (bit) before the pulse enters the RP. The proposed solution works for RPs operating in a depleted regime and is compatible with multichannel configurations.

Suppression of Relative Intensity Noise in Fiber-Optic Raman Polarizers

Victor V. Kozlov, Stefan W. Wabnitz

We propose a method for the suppression of relative intensity noise (RIN) at the output of a Raman polarizer, a special type of Raman amplifier that transforms an input weak beam of unpolarized light into an highly polarized amplified beam towards its output. We show that the RIN which is induced by polarization-dependent gain is suppressed whenever the Raman polarizer works in the depleted pump regime.

Nawfel Azami

Polarization-dependent gain in a Raman fiber amplifier in the depleted pump regime is investigated. Numerical investigations are realized and show that gain fluctuations are highly reduced when signal and pump interactions allow pump depletion.

Crosstalk Reduction in Hybrid Quantum-Classical Networks

Sima Bahrani, Mohsen Razavi, Jawad A. Salehi

In this paper, we propose and investigate several crosstalk reduction techniques for hybrid quantum-classical densewavelength- division-multiplexing systems. The transmission of intense classical signals alongside weak quantum ones on the same fiber introduces some crosstalk noise, mainly due to Raman scattering and nonideal channel isolation, that may severely a ect the performance of quantum key distribution systems. We examine the conventional methods of suppressing this crosstalk noise, and enhance them by proposing an appropriate channel allocation method that reduces the background crosstalk e ectively. Another approach proposed in this paper is the usage of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, which o ers ecient spectral and temporal filtering features.

Intensity noise-driven nonlinear fiber polarization scrambler

Massimiliano Guasoni, Julien Fatome, Stefan W. Wabnitz

We propose and analyze a novel all-optical fiber polarization scrambler based on the transfer (via the Kerr effect) of the intensity fluctuations of an incoherent pump beam into polarization fluctuations of a frequency-shifted signal beam, copropagating in a randomly birefringent telecom fiber. Optimal signal polarization scrambling results whenever the input signal and pump beams have nearly orthogonal states of polarization. The nonlinear polarization scrambler may operate on either cw or high-bit-rate pulsed signals.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexed quantum key distribution in the presence of Raman noise

Sima Bahrani, Mohsen Razavi, Jawad A. Salehi

In this paper, we investigate the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexed quantum key distribution (OFDM-QKD) in an integrated quantum-classical wavelength-division-multiplexing system. The presence of an intense classical signal alongside the quantum one generates Raman background noise. Noise reduction techniques should, then, be carried out at the receiver to suppress this crosstalk noise. In this work, we show that OFDM-QKD enables efficient filtering, in time and frequency domains, making it an attractive solution for the high-rate links at the core of quantum-classical networks.

Bing Qi, Leilei Huang, Yue-Meng Chi +2 more

A novel polarization-frequency-multiplexing scheme is implemented to suppress noise in a fiber-based Gaussian-modulated coherent-state quantum key distribution system. The achievable secrete key rate is 0.30 bit/pulse with a 5 km-fiber and 0.05 bit/pulse with a 20 km-fiber.
