Photon-number state on-demand source by cavity parametric downconversion

Abstract

The authors propose a realizable scheme for an arbitrary photon-number state on-demand source based on parametric downconversion in a doubly resonant photonic cavity. The signal-wavelength resonance serves as storage for signal photons and the idler-wavelength resonance generates time separation between exiting idler photons, enabling photon-number-resolving detection. The counting of idler photons indicates the desired signal photon-number state, which can be released from the cavity on demand. They analyze the statistics of photon-number states generation and estimate the maximal repetition rates. Performance of the monolithic cavity for signal-storage and idler time spacing is limited, however, by external devices, namely, the long recovery time of existing single-photon detectors.

A monolithic, doubly-resonant parametric down-conversion source for Caesium Raman memories

Benjamin Brecht, O. Lazo-Arjona, K. T. Kaczmarek +8 more

We demonstrate a monolithic, doubly-resonant parametric down-conversion source in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide that is compatible with Caesium quantum memories. Our source generates signal and idler photons with wavelengths of 852.4 nm and 1601 nm, allowing for storage of the signal and low-loss fibre transmission of the idler. The photons exhibit spectral bandwidths of ∆νs ≈ 230 MHz and ∆νi ≈ 300 MHz, respectively. We find an effective mode number of K = 1.25(27) which demonstrates single mode emission, and a high spectral brightness of ∼ 1.8 · 104 pairs/(s mW MHz).

Photon number squeezing in repeated parametric downconversion with ancillary photon-number measurements

Boris L. Glebov, Jingyun Fan, Alan L. Migdall

We present a realistic numerical simulation of a source of number-squeezed photon states employing a cavity-based parametric downconversion (PDC) process. A cavity containing the PDC medium is pumped repeatedly. The cavity recycles only one of the PDC output modes, allowing it to be amplified with each subsequent pump pulse. A photon number resolved (PNR) measurement is made on the other PDC output mode following each pump pulse. Once the PNR measurements indicate that the target number of photons has accumulated in the cavity, the pumping is stopped and the resulting photon state is released. The photon number uncertainty in the resulting state is ~3 dB below that of a mean-equivalent coherent state and furthermore the probability of generating the target photon number is similarly increased.

Narrow-band single photons from a single-resonant optical parametric oscillator far below threshold

M. Scholz, Florian Wolfgramm, Ulrike Herzog +1 more

We present a single-resonant optical parametric oscillator pumped far below threshold as a source for narrow-band single photons. Spontaneous generation of single photons via parametric downconversion is modified and follows the cavity transfer function. Cross-correlation measurements between signal and idler beams show a cavity bandwidth of 62MHz. As the main improvement to prior realizations, our cavity is locked to the pump beam via the Hänsch-Couillaud method and therefore allows the continuous generation of heralded single photons with long-term stability.

Statistics of Narrow-Band Single Photons for Quantum Memories Generated by Ultrabright Cavity-Enhanced Parametric Down-Conversion

Matthias Scholz, Lars Koch, Oliver J. Benson

Narrow-band single photons represent an important resource for quantum memories due to their efficient interaction with atomic resonances. In this Letter, we report on the generation of photons with 3 MHz linewidth by cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion and demonstrate direct proof of their single-photon character by detection of heralding idler photons. Compared to a Poissonian source, a suppression of higher-order photon numbers by nearly 2 orders of magnitude could be achieved. Moreover, the brightness of our source exceeds previous realizations by more than a factor of 100.

Theory of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion

Yasser Jerónimo-Moreno, S. Rodriguez-Benavides, Alfred B. U’Ren

In this paper we study photon pairs generated in a nonlinear cavity composed of a nonlinear crystal surrounded by mirrors, by the process of spotaneous parametric downconversion. We analyze two different regimes: singly-resonant cavities where the signal and idler modes are resonant and doubly-resonant cavities where the pump mode is also resonant. We present analytic expressions for the joint spectral amplitude in these two cases and study the reduction in emission bandwidth as the cavity coefficient finesse is increased. We also study the enhancement of the source brightness from the presence of the cavity.
