Normalization of states for a quantum magnetic circular billiard

Abstract

An analytical expression is given for the normalization of wave functions of a charge particle inside a circular billiard in presence of an external magnetic field. The physical meaning of this normalizing factor is related to the derivative of the energy eigenvalue with respect to the radius of the billiard. A classical estimate of this factor gives another analytical expression which is in good numerical agreement with the quantum analytical result.

Behaviour of boundary functions for quantum billiards

A B cker, S F rstberger, R Schubert +1 more

We study the behaviour of the normal derivative of eigenfunctions of the Helmholtz equation inside billiards with Dirichlet boundary condition. These boundary functions are of particular importance because they uniquely determine the eigenfunctions inside the billiard and also other physical quantities of interest. Therefore, they form a reduced representation of the quantum system, analogous to the Poincaré section of the classical system. For the normal derivatives we introduce an equivalent to the standard Green function and derive an integral equation on the boundary. Based on this integral equation we compute the first two terms of the mean asymptotic behaviour of the boundary functions for large energies. The first term is universal and independent of the shape of the billiard. The second one is proportional to the curvature of the boundary. The asymptotic behaviour is compared with numerical results for the stadium billiard, different limaçon billiards and the circle billiard, and good agreement is found. Furthermore, we derive an asymptotic completeness relation for the boundary functions.

Boundary Integral Method for Stationary States of Two-Dimensional Quantum Systems

Ioan Kosztin, Klaus J. Schulten

The boundary integral method for calculating the stationary states of a quantum particle in nano-devices and quantum billiards is presented in detail at an elementary level. According to the method, wave functions inside the domain of the device or billiard are expressed in terms of line integrals of the wavefunction and its normal derivative along the domain's boundary; the respective energy eigenvalues are obtained as the roots of Fredholm determinants. Numerical implementations of the method are described and applied to determine the energy level statistics of billiards with circular and stadium shapes and demonstrate the quantum mechanical characteristics of chaotic motion. The treatment of other examples as well as the advantages and limitations of the boundary integral method are discussed.

Semiclassical quantization of circular billiard in homogeneous magnetic field: Berry‐Tabor approach

Gergely Palla, Gábor Vattay, József Cserti

Semiclassical methods are accurate in general in leading order of ħ, since they approximate quantum mechanics via canonical invariants. Often canonically noninvariant terms appear in the Schrödinger equation which are proportional to ħ2, therefore a discrepancy between different semiclassical trace formulas in order of ħ2 seems to be possible. We derive here the Berry‐Tabor formula for a circular billiard in a homogeneous magnetic field. The formula derived for the semiclassical density of states surprisingly coincides with the results of Creagh‐Littlejohn theory despite the presence of canonically noninvariant terms.

Expansion method for stationary states of quantum billiards

David L. Kaufman, Ioan Kosztin, Klaus J. Schulten

A simple expansion method for numerically calculating the energy levels and the corresponding wave functions of a quantum particle in a two-dimensional infinite potential well with arbitrary shape (quantum billiard) is presented. The method permits the study of quantum billiards in an introductory quantum mechanics course. According to the method, wave functions inside the billiard are expressed in terms of an expansion of a complete set of orthonormal functions defined in a surrounding rectangle for which the Dirichlet boundary conditions apply, while approximating the billiard boundary by a potential energy step of a sufficiently large size. Numerical implementations of the method are described and applied to determine the energies and wave functions for quarter-circle, circle, and triangle billiards. Finally, the expansion method is applied to investigate the quantum signatures of chaos in a classically chaotic generic-triangle billiard.

Magnetization dynamics of a harmonically confined quantum charged particle in time dependent magnetic fields inside a circular solenoid

V. V. Dodonov

Abstract I consider a quantum spinless charged particle moving in the xy plane under the action of a time-dependent magnetic field described by means of the linear vector potential in the ‘circular’ gauge A = B ( t )(− y , x )/2 and in the presence of the confining potential m g 2 x 2 + y 2 / 2 . This potential guarantees finite values of all second-order moments in the initial equilibrium (thermal) state. Time-dependent mean values of the energy and magnetic moment are expressed in terms of solutions to the classical equation of motion ε ̈ + Ω 2 ( t ) ε = 0 . Simple approximate results are found in the cases of the sudden jump of magnetic field, the parametric resonance, and the adiabatic evolution. They are compared with exact solutions in terms of the hypergeometric function for the specific function B ( t ) of the Epstein–Eckart type. A great amplification of the magnetic moment is discovered for the initial high-temperature states, both for the fast and slow monotonous variations of the magnetic field. Classical adiabatic invariants do not exist if the magnetic field slowly goes to zero or changes its sign.

The quartic anharmonic oscillator and its associated nonconstant magnetic field

Thomas W. Allen, Costas A. Anastassiou, W. H. Klink

Quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillators and Hamiltonians for particles in external magnetic fields are related to representations of nilpotent groups. Using this connection the eigenfunctions of the quartic anharmonic oscillator with potential Vα(x)=(α+(x2/2))2 can be used to determine the eigenfunctions of a charged particle in a nonconstant magnetic field, of the form Bz=β2+β3x. The quartic anharmonic oscillator eigenvalues for low-lying states are obtained numerically and a function which interpolates between α≪0 (a double harmonic oscillator) and α≫0 (a harmonic oscillator) is shown to give a good fit to the numerical data. Approximate expressions for the quartic anharmonic oscillator eigenfunctions are then used to get the eigenfunctions for the magnetic field Hamiltonian.
