Abstract

We present the low-temperature dynamic properties of the quantum one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with integer spin S coupled to phonons. The calculation of the relaxation function is performed using the combination of the memory function formalism with the modified spin-wave theory. The procedure includes up to two-magnon and magnon–phonon processes. We show that the phonon–magnon coupling smooths the double-peak structure obtained for the model in the absence of phonons, when the wavevector q moves from q = π.

We present the low-temperature dynamic properties of the quantum one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with integer Spin S with spin-phonon interaction, Dzyaloshins-kii-Moriya interaction and taking into account three magnon processes. First, we present the low-temperature dynamic properties of the quantum one-dimensionalHeisenberg antiferromagnet with integer spin S coupled to phonons. The calculation of the relaxation function is performed using the combination of the memory function formalism with the modified spin-wave theory. The procedure includes up to two-magnon and magnon-phonon processes. We show that the magnon-phonon coupling smooths the double-peak structure obtained for the model in the absence of phonons, when the wavevector q moves from q = ¼. After that, we present a calculation of the in-plane dynamical structure factor for the S = 1 one-dimensional antiferromagnet with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction using the Schwinger boson mean-field theory. Then, we present the dynamical properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet takinginto account three magnon processes. We calculate the correlation function in time using the modified spin-wave theory. The procedure here includes up to two and three-magnon processes. We show that the double peak structure obtained for the model taking into account two-magnon processes is not smoothed when we take account three-magnon processes too

Spin dynamics of the frustrated integer spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain

G. M. Rocha-Filho, M. E. Gouvêa, Antonio S. T. Pires

We present low-temperature static and dynamic properties of the quantum one-dimensional isotropic integer spin Heisenberg magnet with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour (nn) and next-nearest-neighbour (nnn) interactions. The modified spin-wave theory is used to provide quantities such as the spin-wave dispersion relation, the ground-state energy, the gap and its dependence with temperature, and the asymptotic behaviour of the spin–spin correlation function. The ground state energy and the singlet–triplet energy gap are obtained for several values of j, defined as the ratio of the nnn interaction constant to the nn one. Our results show that the ground-state and the gap energies increase with j, in accordance with numerical results available in the literature. The calculation of the dynamic correlation function is performed using the projection operator formalism: the procedure includes up to two-magnon processes. We show that, depending on the values of the frustration parameter j, the wavevector and the temperature, a double-peak structure for the dynamical correlation function can develop.

Spin dynamics in the two-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

A. Fabricio Albuquerque, Antonio S. T. Pires, M. E. Gouvêa

We present low-temperature dynamic properties of the quantum two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with spin $S=1∕2$. The calculation of the dynamic correlation function is performed by combining a projection operator formalism and the modified spin-wave theory, which gives a gap in the dispersion relation for finite temperatures. The so calculated dynamic correlation function shows a double peak structure. We also obtain the spin-wave damping and compare our results to some experimental data and theoretical results obtained by other authors using different approaches.

Dynamical properties of one-dimensional antiferromagnets: A Monte Carlo study

J. J. Deisz, Mark Jarrell, D. L. Cox

A combination of world-line quantum Monte Carlo and maximum-entropy methods is used to calculate the dynamic structure factor ${\mathit{S}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$(q,\ensuremath{\omega}) for one-dimensional antiferromagnets. A comparison to exact results demonstrates that qualitative features of spectra are reproduced, but are broadened. The broadening is frequency dependent with low-frequency features being reproduced most accurately. Peak positions are well described. Results for the Heisenberg model with S\ensuremath{\le}2 demonstrate the qualitative difference between the dynamics of half-integer and integer spins predicted by Haldane. From the positions of the low-temperature q=\ensuremath{\pi} peaks quantitative estimates are produced for the S=1 and 2 gaps. The q=\ensuremath{\pi} peak position for S=1 increases with temperature in agreement with experiment. When on-site anisotropy is included for S=1 a gap splitting results that resembles that found for NENP [Ni(${\mathrm{C}}_{2}$${\mathrm{H}}_{8}$${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{2}$${\mathrm{NO}}_{2}$${\mathrm{ClO}}_{4}$].

Low-temperature dynamics of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external field

Bart De Raedt, Hans A. De Raedt, Jan Fivez

The influence of the nonlinearity of the spin equations of motion on the dynamic structure factor of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external field is calculated in the low-temperature limit. The memory functions for the longitudinal and transverse spin component are calculated rigorously to lowest nonvanishing order in the temperature. In this limit, only two-magnon processes contribute to the memory functions. Divergencies in the two-magnon density of states give rise to resonances in addition to the usual spin-wave peak in the dynamic structure factor.

Study of the excited states of the quantum antiferromagnets

Mohammad G. Merdan

We investigate the quantum dynamics of the spins on different Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin lattice systems. Firstly, we applied the coupled-cluster method to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic \emph{XXZ} model on a square lattice by employing an approximation which contains two-body long-range correlations and high-order four-body local correlations. Improvement is found for the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetization, and the critical anisotropy when comparing with the approximation including the two-body correlations alone. We also obtain the full excitation spectrum which is in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results and the high-order spin-wave theory.Secondly, we study the longitudinal excitations of quantum antiferromagnets on a triangular lattice by a recently proposed microscopic many-body approach based on magnon-density waves. We calculate the full longitudinal excitation spectra of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model for a general spin quantum number in the isotropic limit. Similar to the square lattice model, we find that, at the center of the first hexagonal Brillouin zone $\Gamma(\mathbf q=0)$ and at the magnetic ordering wavevectors $\pm[\mathbf Q= (4\pi/3,0)]$, the excitation spectra become gapless in the thermodynamic limit, due to the slow, logarithmic divergence of the structure factor. However, these longitudinal modes on two-dimensional models may be considered as quasi-gapped, as any finite-size effect or small anisotropy will induce a large energy gap, when compared with the counterpart of the transverse spin-wave excitations. We have also investigated the excited states of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, including the longitudinal modes based on the magnon-density waves. A model Hamiltonian with a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy is first studied by a spin-wave theory based on the one-boson method; the ground state thus obtained is employed for the study of the longitudinal modes. The full energy spectra of both the transverse modes (i.e., magnons) and the longitudinal modes are obtained as functions of the nearest-neighbor coupling and the anisotropy constants. We have found two longitudinal modes due to the non-collinear nature of the triangular antiferromagnetic order, similar to that of the phenomenological field theory approach by Affleck. The excitation energy gaps due to the anisotropy and the energy gaps of the longitudinal modes without anisotropy are then investigated. We then compares our results for the longitudinal energy gaps at the magnetic wavevectors with the experimental results for several antiferromagnetic compounds with both integer and non-integer spin quantum numbers, and we find good agreements after the higher-order contributions are included in our calculations.
