Tomographic Measurement of Joint Photon Statistics of the Twin-Beam Quantum State

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the joint photon-number probability distribution for a two-mode quantum state created by a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier. The measured distributions exhibit up to 1.9 dB of quantum correlation between the signal and idler photon numbers, whereas the marginal distributions are thermal as expected for parametric fluorescence.

Measurement of Joint Photon-Number Distribution of a Twin-Beam State by Means of Optical Homodyne Tomography

We report the first measurement of the joint photon-number probability distribution for a two-mode quantum state created by a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier. The measured distribution exhibits inherently quantum correlations between the signal and idler photon numbers, whereas the marginal distributions are thermal as expected for parametric fluorescence. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Investigation of the photon-number statistics of twin beams by direct detection

Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai, Masayoshi Watanabe

We present the results of an experiment in which we observed photon-number statistics of twin beams emerging from a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator. We generated the photocurrent for recording by detecting the light and mixing it with a standard electrical oscillator. The measured photocurrent variances exhibited a quantum correlation of as much as -4.9 dB between signal and idler, whereas their photon number distributions were super-Poissonian. We also obtained the difference photon-number distribution.

Experimental investigation of the intensity fluctuation joint probability and conditional distributions of the twin-beam quantum state

Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai, Masayoshi Watanabe

We give the intensity fluctuation joint probability of the twin-beam quantum state, which was generated with an optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold. Then we present what to our knowledge is the first measurement of the intensity fluctuation conditional probability distributions of twin beams. The measured inference variance of twin beams 0.62+/-0.02, which is less than the standard quantum limit of unity, indicates inference with a precision better than that of separable states. The measured photocurrent variance exhibits a quantum correlation of as much as -4.9+/-0.2 dB between the signal and the idler.

Statistical properties of twin beams generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion

Jan Peřina, Ondřej Haderka, Martin Hamar

Measurement of photon-number statistics of fields composed of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric downcoversion pumped by strong ultrashort pulses is described. Final detection quantum efficiencies, noises as well as possible loss of one or both photons from a pair are taken into account. Measured data provided by an intensified single-photon CCD camera are analyzed along the developed model. The joint signal-idler photon-number distribution is obtained using the expectation maximization algorithm. Covariance of the signal and idler photon-numbers equals 80 %. Statistics of the generated photon pairs are identified to be Poissonian in our case. Distribution of the integrated intensities of the signal and idler fields shows strong correlations between the fields. Negative values of this distribution occurring in some regions clearly demonstrate a nonclassical character of the light composed of photon pairs.

Self-homodyne tomography of a twin-beam state

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Michael Vasilyev, Prem Kumar

A self-homodyne detection scheme is proposed to perform two-mode tomography on a twin-beam state at the output of a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier. This scheme has been devised to improve the matching between the local oscillator and the signal modes, which is the main limitation to the overall quantum efficiency in conventional homodyning. The feasibility of the measurement is analyzed on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations, studying the effect of nonunit quantum efficiency on detection of the correlation and the total photon-number oscillations of the twin-beam state.

Simple direct measurement of nonclassical joint signal–idler photon-number statistics and the correlation area of twin photon beams

Ondřej Haderka, Jan Peřina, Martin Hamar

The measurement of the joint signal–idler photon-number distribution of a field obtained from spontaneous parametric downconversion using an intensified CCD camera is presented. It is shown that a classicality criterion is violated directly by the measured data. Characteristic dimensions of the area of correlation are determined in the same experimental set-up.
