Nested Hilbert Spaces in Quantum Mechanics. I

Abstract

A nested Hilbert space is a pair of Hilbert spaces H0, H1, each of which is in a certain sense identified with a dense subset of the other. These structures are used here to study analytic continuation into ``unphysical sheets'' and to discuss nonnormalizable states of quantum-mechanical systems.

Unbounded Operators, Physicality, and Modality in Quantum Theories

Zhonghao Lu

In this paper, I address the problem regarding the physicality of Hilbert space in quantum mechanics, a topic brought into focus by Carcassi et al.'s paper "The unphysicality of Hilbert spaces" recently. I argue for the physicality of the Hilbert space in quantum mechanics, and demonstrate that there are inevitable ambiguity and arbitrariness if we want to identify the set of physical states with a proper subset of it. Moreover, I distinguish the ontological and modal reading of physicality from the pragmatic and operational reading of physicality, and then develop what I call the hierarchical view of physicality. According to this view, physicality is not a monolithic concept, but a layered one that admits degrees. I show the connection between the concept of physicality and modal metaphysics, and finally explain how it can be used to address the interpretational problem of quantum field theory brought by the existence of inequivalent representations.

On Application of Unbounded Hilbert Linear Operators in Quantum Mechanics

Eziokwu C. Emmanuel, Bright O. Osu, Iwuanyanwu Vitalis

This research work presents an important Banach space in functional analysis which is known and calledHilbert space. We verified the crucial operations in this space and their applications in physics, particularlyin quantum mechanics. The operations are restricted to the unbounded linear operators densely definedin Hilbert space which is the case of prime interest in physics, precisely in quantum machines. Precisely,we discuss the role of unbounded linear operators in quantum mechanics, particularly, in the study ofHeisenberg uncertainty principle, time-independent Schrodinger equation, Harmonic oscillation, andfinally, the application of Hamilton operator. To make these analyses fruitful, the knowledge of Hilbertspaces was first investigated followed by the spectral theory of unbounded operators, which are claimedto be densely defined in Hilbert space. Consequently, the theory of probability is also employed to studysome systems since the operators used in studying these systems are only dense in H (i.e., they must (orprobably) be in the domain of H defined by L2 ( ) −∞,+∞ ).

Symmetry representations in the rigged Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics

Sujeewa Wickramasekara, Arno Böhm

We discuss some basic properties of Lie group representations in rigged Hilbert spaces. In particular, we show that a differentiable representation in a rigged Hilbert space may be obtained as the projective limit of a family of continuous representations in a nested scale of Hilbert spaces. We also construct a couple of examples illustrative of the key features of group representations in rigged Hilbert spaces. Finally, we establish a simple criterion for the integrability of an operator Lie algebra in a rigged Hilbert space.

Super Hilbert Space and the Quantum-Mechanical Time Operators

David M. Rosenbaum

The basic idea of super Hilbert space is to represent physical states by continuous linear functionals on a space of good functions, rather than by functions in a Hilbert space. Since L2 is in one-to-one correspondence with a subset of super Hilbert space, everything that can be done in L2 can be done in super Hilbert space. In addition, however, it is possible to have a time operator and thus to base relativistic quantum mechanics on covariant four-dimensional commutation relations.

The role of the rigged Hilbert space in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract. There is compelling evidence that, when continuous spectrum is present, the natural mathematical setting for Quantum Mechanics is the rigged Hilbert space rather than just the Hilbert space. In particular, Dirac’s bra-ket formalism is fully implemented by the rigged Hilbert space rather than just by the Hilbert space. In this paper, we provide a pedestrian introduction to the role the rigged Hilbert space plays in Quantum Mechanics, by way of a simple, exactly solvable example. The procedure will be constructive and based on a recent publication. We also provide a thorough discussion on the physical significance of the rigged Hilbert space.
