Squeezing the Vacuum in Atom-Field Interactions

Abstract

We discuss the squeezing of vacuum fluctuations by resonant interaction with a suitably prepared atom. We demonstrate the crucial role of atomic dipole fluctuations in modifying the vacuum noise. We show how the generation of field squeezing in spontaneous and fluorescent processes is dependent on the squeezing of the atomic dipole.

Dipole-dipole interaction in squeezed vacua

Elena V. Goldstein, Pierre Meystre

We study the near-resonant dipole-dipole interaction between two atoms in a broadband squeezed vacuum. We show that this ``vacuum'' modifies the rate of spontaneous emission of the atoms so that it may depend not merely on their relative position, as is normally the case, but also on their center-of-mass position. The explicit form of this latter dependence is a function of the way squeezing is achieved. We also show that in contrast to the spontaneous decay rate, squeezed vacua do not modify the dipole-dipole potential between the atoms as compared to its usual form. Finally, we develop a Monte Carlo wave-function description of the interaction between atoms with an arbitrary internal structure and a squeezed vacuum and apply this formalism to the case of off-resonant excitation of the atoms. We find that in addition to the usual light shift, the squeezed vacuum results in an additional contribution to the effective potential governing the evolution of the atomic ground states. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Squeezing and superposition states

K. Wódkiewicz, P. L. Knight, Simon J. Buckle +1 more

We present a new class of radiation field states which exhibit squeezed fluctuations. This new class of states are formed by a simple implementation of the superposition principle and are fundamentally different from the conventional two-photon coherent squeezed states. We demonstrate the importance of these states as the natural product of the resonant interaction of suitably prepared atoms with the radiation field. We establish a general relationship between reduced quantum fluctuations of these field states and the dipole fluctuations of the atoms which produce them.

Quantum Fluctuations and Squeezing in the Interaction of an Atom with a Single Field Mode

P. L. Knight

The interaction of a single atom with a single quantized field mode is one of the simplest quantum optical models of resonance, yet exhibits a wide variety of non-trivial fundamental features which depend for their existence on field quantization. We discuss such problems with special emphasis on reversible spontaneous emission and one-photon Rabi oscillations, photon statistical collapses and revivals of coherent evolution, and the existence of phase-dependent squeezed quantum noise.

Effect of the Dipole-dipole Interaction on the Pure Two-atom Squeezed State

Z. Ficek

The influence of the dipole-dipole interaction on the final atomic state of a two-atom system driven by a coherent laser field and damped by a broad-band squeezed vacuum is discussed. It is shown that in the absence of a coherent laser field the final atomic state is independent of the dipole-dipole interaction and can be the pure two-atom squeezed state only if detuning of the squeezed vacuum field from atomic resonance is equal to zero. In the presence of a coherent laser field, the final atomic state depends on the dipole-dipole interaction. As the latter increases, the final atomic state shifts from a mixed state to the pure two-atom squeezed state. However, this happens only if the driving field and the squeezed field frequencies are tuned to the atomic transition frequency. For the driving field and the squeezed vacuum field frequencies detuned from atomic resonance the system decays into a mixed state irrespective of the dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms.

Two-atom dipole amplitude-squared squeezing in a system of a two-mode vacuum field interacting with two coupled atoms

Yu Wan‐Lun

The two-atom dipole amplitude-squared squeezing in a system of a two-mode vacuum field interacting with two coupled atoms was studied. The influences of the initial atomic coherence and dipole-dipole interaction on the squeezing effect were discussed by numerical calculations.
