Sparse and trapping dressed states in a quasicontinuum system

Abstract

The authors study a quasicontinuum system for which there exists a sparse dressed state composed of the ground state and a single state of the true continuum. In general, the loss of population from the ground state to a true continuum via the quasicontinuum is total. In a special case, however, population is trapped in the ground state and the sparse dressed state is replaced by a trapping state containing no contribution from the true continuum.

Dressed states and spectra in quasicontinuum excitation

Sam Tarzi, PAUL M. RADMORE

We consider a system in which a ground state is coupled to a general quasicontinuum of levels and to a true continuum. In the long-time limit, the true continuum spectrum can exhibit zeros, the positions of which depend on the energies of the quasicontinuum levels. The initial conditions determine the existence of these zeros. We describe this phenomenon by studying dressed states for the complete system and in particular derive dressed states which are ground-state independent. We use these to explain the locations of the zeros and their dependence on the initial conditions.

Population trapping in photoionisation to dressed continuum states

Piers Coleman, P. L. Knight

Continuum states in photoionisation may be dressed by laser coupling to bound states. The authors show that the photoexcitation of such dressed continuum states can lead to the trapping of part of the population in a coherent superposition state and the diminution of total ion yields.

Coherent population trapping in the system of a Λ-configuration multilevel atom driven by a two-mode quantized field

Gao‐xiang Li, PENG JIN-SHENG

We have studied the atomic coherent population trapping in the system of a two-mode quantized field interacting with a Λ-configuration multilevel atom with one lower discrete state and two sets of quasicontinuum states, or a set of quasicontinuum states and a set of true continuum states. The influence of the atom's initial preparation and the properties of the atomic upper levels on whether or not atomic coherent population trapping occurs, and the states of the field which trap the atom are analyzed.

Population trapping and dispersion in a three-level system

PAUL M. RADMORE, P. L. Knight

The population dynamics and spectra of a three-level system driven by two applied fields of arbitrary amplitudes and detunings are examined using dressed-state techniques. The authors report the existence of novel dispersive features in the variation with detuning of the intermediate-state population.

Spontaneous Trapping In A Three-level Atom

David A. Cardimona, M. P. Sharma

For a 3-level atom in the "V-configuration" (two excited states |1> and |2> each dipole-coupled to a common ground state |g>) interacting with a quantized field, we have found a set of initial atomic state amplitudes for which the usual time-dependent oscillations collapses, and revivals vanish. Preparing the atom initially in this special way forces the atomic population to remain coherently trapped in this configuration. The dressed-state energy of this particular linear combination of bare-atom states is zero, so that eiEt= 1 and the population remains constant in time - as long as the applied field remains on.
