Abstract

The phase-conjugation characteristics of stimulated thermal scattering (STS) in absorbing liquid and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) separately excited in pure acetone were compared, and the effect of focal pumping conditions on them was studied. It is shown that high-quality phase conjugation can be obtained by STS in absorbing liquid under stronger pumping conditions.

Influence of multiphoton absorption on stimulated scattering and phase conjugation of excimer XeCl laser radiation

Vladimir Boris Karpov, Владлен Васильевич Коробкин, Д. А. Долголенко

Phase conjugation (PC) of XeCl laser radiation using two different kinds of stimulated scattering, i.e., stimulated temperature scattering (STS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), is investigated. It is shown that STS can be stimulated both by the linear and multiphoton absorption, and that SBS can be suppressed by the effect of phase-matching violation caused by the multiphoton absorption. The quality of PC deteriorates when SBS is replaced by STS. The two possible reasons for this deterioration are discussed.

Phase conjugation of XeCl excimer laser radiation by excitation of various types of stimulated light scattering

Vladimir Boris Karpov, Владлен Васильевич Коробкин, Д. А. Долголенко

Phase conjugation of XeCl excimer laser radiation (λ = 308 nm) was investigated using two different types of stimulated scattering: stimulated Brillouin scattering (STBS) and stimulated thermal scattering (STTS). It was shown that STTS may be caused by linear and multiphoton absorption, whilst STBS may be suppressed by loss of phase matching caused by absorption. The phase conjugation quality deteriorates on transition from STBS to STTS.

Non-frequency-shifted, high-fidelity phase conjugation with aberrated pump waves by Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing

Mark D. Skeldon, Paul Narum, Robert W. Boyd

The results of an experimental investigation of a new geometry for producing phase conjugation by Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing are presented. In this geometry, the four-wave mixing medium is carbon disulfide, and the backward-going pump wave is created from the transmitted forward-going pump wave by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in glycerol. The two pump waves are hence phase conjugates of each other, and the quality of the phase-conjugation process is not degraded even by the use of an aberrated pump wave. The probe wave is created by SBS in carbon disulfide, which has a Brillouin frequency half that of glycerol, and the conjugate wave is therefore generated at the same frequency as the probe. Since the pump and signal waves differ in frequency by the Brillouin frequency of the carbon disulfide four-wave mixing medium, high reflectivities (approximately 2000%) are obtained as a result of Brillouin resonance enhancement.

Phase conjugation by a technique of spatial radiation filtering in a saturable absorber

V E Sherstobitov, Andrey Yu. Rodionov

To the best of our knowledge, a novel self-phase-conjugation technique for laser radiation is proposed, which is based on the self-filtration of the phase-conjugate component in a nonlinear absorbing medium, bleached by a pump wave with the intricate spatial structure in the region of location of its speckles. Similar to the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) case, the mechanism of the phase-conjugate wave discrimination against the noise background is based on the coincidence of the speckles in the pump and conjugate waves throughout the bulk of the medium. To compensate for a drop in the signal power due to total absorption, the amplification in conventional laser gain cells is used. The feasibility of the phase conjugation with reflectivities from unity to tens of percent is demonstrated by analytical estimates and numerical calculations. The technique can find application in the middle and far IR spectral regions, where the implementation of phase conjugation via SBS is either hindered or impossible at all.

Mechanism of optical phase conjugation by stimulated Brillouin scattering

Qihuang Gong, Yong Huang, Jia-Sun Yang

Optical phase conjugation by stimulated Brillouin scattering, excited by an inhomogeneous light field with a self-focusing strong component, has been investigated. The conjugation fraction \ensuremath{\eta} depends on the intensity ratio \ensuremath{\sigma} of the strong component to the total pump light, attaining a maximum at a certain value of \ensuremath{\sigma}. Theoretical analysis shows that a four-wave-mixing process is involved in its physical mechanism. By taking into account the effect of self-focusing, a fair agreement with experiments is obtained.
