Influence of multiphoton absorption on stimulated scattering and phase conjugation of excimer XeCl laser radiation

Abstract

Phase conjugation (PC) of XeCl laser radiation using two different kinds of stimulated scattering, i.e., stimulated temperature scattering (STS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), is investigated. It is shown that STS can be stimulated both by the linear and multiphoton absorption, and that SBS can be suppressed by the effect of phase-matching violation caused by the multiphoton absorption. The quality of PC deteriorates when SBS is replaced by STS. The two possible reasons for this deterioration are discussed.

Phase conjugation of XeCl excimer laser radiation by excitation of various types of stimulated light scattering

Vladimir Boris Karpov, Владлен Васильевич Коробкин, Д. А. Долголенко

Phase conjugation of XeCl excimer laser radiation (λ = 308 nm) was investigated using two different types of stimulated scattering: stimulated Brillouin scattering (STBS) and stimulated thermal scattering (STTS). It was shown that STTS may be caused by linear and multiphoton absorption, whilst STBS may be suppressed by loss of phase matching caused by absorption. The phase conjugation quality deteriorates on transition from STBS to STTS.

Effect of focal pumping conditions on the phase-conjugation characteristics of STS and SBS

Anling Liu, Weijun Zhang, Xiaoming Gao +1 more

The phase-conjugation characteristics of stimulated thermal scattering (STS) in absorbing liquid and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) separately excited in pure acetone were compared, and the effect of focal pumping conditions on them was studied. It is shown that high-quality phase conjugation can be obtained by STS in absorbing liquid under stronger pumping conditions.

Phase conjugation by a technique of spatial radiation filtering in a saturable absorber

V E Sherstobitov, Andrey Yu. Rodionov

To the best of our knowledge, a novel self-phase-conjugation technique for laser radiation is proposed, which is based on the self-filtration of the phase-conjugate component in a nonlinear absorbing medium, bleached by a pump wave with the intricate spatial structure in the region of location of its speckles. Similar to the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) case, the mechanism of the phase-conjugate wave discrimination against the noise background is based on the coincidence of the speckles in the pump and conjugate waves throughout the bulk of the medium. To compensate for a drop in the signal power due to total absorption, the amplification in conventional laser gain cells is used. The feasibility of the phase conjugation with reflectivities from unity to tens of percent is demonstrated by analytical estimates and numerical calculations. The technique can find application in the middle and far IR spectral regions, where the implementation of phase conjugation via SBS is either hindered or impossible at all.

Laser Stimulated Scattering and Multiphoton Excitation

Guang S. He

Abstract Laser Stimulated Scattering and Multiphoton Excitation is the first book that comprehensively covers the following three major areas: (1) Quantum electrodynamic theory of stimulated scattering and multiphoton excitation processes; (2) Various stimulated scattering effects, including the early discovered stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), the later investigated stimulated Kerr scattering (SKS), and the recently developed stimulated Rayleigh–Bragg scattering (SRBS) and stimulated Mie scattering (SMS); (3) Multiphoton excitation-based nonlinear optical effects, photoelectric effects, atomic and molecular ionization effects, and molecular dissociation effects. Each chapter covers: (i) the concept and mechanism description, (ii) the necessary theoretical formulation, (iii) the experimental research achievements, and (iv) the scientific/technological applications. Laser Stimulated Scattering and Multiphoton Excitation is useful and suitable for academics, experts, and students working or interested in the areas of nonlinear optics, nonlinear photonics, laser spectroscopy, physical optics, physical chemistry, and optoelectronic engineering.
