Abstract

High-bandwidth accumulated spectral gratings are experimentally studied in Tm3+:YAG by the stimulated-photon-echo technique with a mode-locked picosecond Ti:sapphire laser system. The experimental results show that the spectral grating builds up and decays on the time scale of the metastable-state lifetime (∼10 ms), provided that the time interval of accumulating shots is of the order of the excited-state lifetime (800 µs). An echo efficiency of the order of 0.1% was achieved with pulse intensities 2 orders of magnitude less than those needed for a single-shot process. These results fit well an analytic solution of the Bloch equations and a three-level system relaxation model.

Two-pulse, stimulated and accumulated photon echoes are investigated for the first time in a highly doped crystal Tm:YAG containing 10 at.% Tm3+. The decay curves of the two-pulse and stimulated photon echoes generated at 793,15 nm on the transition 3H6(1)-3H4(1) of the impurity ions are measured in the absence of an applied magnetic field. Parameters describing the energy and phase relaxation are determined. The dependence of the accumulated photon echo intensity on the number of excitation pulse pairs is investigated.

Observation of photon echo in Er^3+:YAG at 1527 µm

Y. Zhang, Xiao A. Shen, Ravinder Kachru

We report what is to our knowledge the first experimental observation of two- and three-pulse echoes in Er(3+) :YAG at 1.527microm . The experiment was performed on the transition from the (4)I(15/2) ground state to the lowest Stark level of the (4)I(13/2) excited state. The corresponding homogeneous dephasing time was measured to be approximately 50ns at 1 and 7K. In addition, three-pulse echo decay indicated a lifetime of the spectral grating of ~30micros . Implications of these results for optical data storage and optical signal processing are discussed.

Optical decoherence studies of Tm3+:Y3Ga5O12

Decoherence of the 795 nm $^{3}\mathrm{H}{}_{6}$ to $^{3}\mathrm{H}{}_{4}$ transition in $1%{\mathrm{Tm}}^{3+}:{\mathrm{Y}}_{3}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{5}{\mathrm{O}}_{12}$ (Tm:YGG) is studied at temperatures as low as 1.2 K. The temperature, magnetic field, frequency, and time scale (spectral diffusion) dependence of the optical coherence lifetime is measured. Our results show that the coherence lifetime is impacted less by spectral diffusion than other known thulium-doped materials. Photon echo excitation and spectral hole burning methods reveal uniform decoherence properties and the possibility to produce full transparency for persistent spectral holes across the entire 56 GHz inhomogeneous bandwidth of the optical transition. Temperature-dependent decoherence is well described by elastic Raman scattering of phonons with an additional weaker component that may arise from a low density of glass-like dynamic disorder modes (two-level systems). Analysis of the observed behavior suggests that an optical coherence lifetime approaching 1 ms may be possible in this system at temperatures below 1 K for crystals grown with optimized properties. Overall, we find that Tm:YGG has superior decoherence properties compared to other Tm-doped crystals and is a promising candidate for applications that rely on long coherence lifetimes, such as optical quantum memories and photonic signal processing.

Experimental results on the modulation frequency dependence of the echo signal strength and also the excitation wavelength dependence of the echo decay curves in Nd:silicate glass are presented.

Sub-Picosecond Accumulated Photon Echoes with Incoherent Light in Nd3+-Doped Silicate Glass

Since the first observation of accumulated photon echoes by Hesslink and Wiersna [1], nearly transform-limited mode-locked pulse trains have been used as the excitation source, and the resolution times have been limited by the widths of the pulses. In this paper we show theoretically and experimentally that the time resolution of the accumulated photon echoes is determine not by the pulse width but by the correlation time of the excitation field [2]. This indicates that it is possible to obtain a sub-picosecond resolution in accumulated photon echoes Sven by using a cw laser (non-mode-locked), if the laser output has a sufficiently broad and smooth spectrum.
