Abstract

We apply optimal control techniques to maximize the absorptionless index of refraction, the density-dependent piezophotonic switching between absorption and amplification, and the ground-state energy-level-spacing-dependent magnetophotonic switching of susceptibility in a dense medium of coherently prepared three-level systems.

We study the effect of near dipole-dipole interactions on the electric susceptibility of a coherently prepared three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system. We discuss the influence of atomic nonlinearities on the recently predicted enhancement of the absorptionless index of refraction and inversionless gain due to local field effects [J.P. Dowling and C.M. Bowden, Phys. Rev. Lett. 70 1421 1993] and predict a density dependent, or piezophotonic, switching between absorption and amplification.

Optimal control of pulse amplification without inversion

Ningjun Wang, HERSCHEL A. RABITZ

We apply an optimal control technique (OCT) to design a secondary coupling pulse that can control the amplification of a given primary optical pulse in a dense media of coherently prepared three-level \ensuremath{\lambda}-type atoms without population inversion. Effects of pulse absorption, amplification, and reshaping by the medium are incorporated in the OCT. We demonstrate numerically that shape-invariant as well as shape-distorted amplification without population inversion can be achieved by properly designing the shape of the coupling pulse. The maximum amplification obtainable is shown to be dependent on the initial atomic coherence as well as the upper bound of the coupling pulse intensity. The group velocity of the primary pulse can also be controlled by the coupling pulse. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Optimal control of population transfer in an optically dense medium

Ningjun Wang, HERSCHEL A. RABITZ

We apply the optimal control technique (OCT) to design an optical pulse pair that controls the population transfer in a medium of three-level atoms. The absorption and reshaping of the controlling pulses by the medium are taken into account. The efficiency of the population transfer is improved significantly compared with designs that do not incorporate pulse absorption and reshaping.

A review of local field effects in lasing without inversion

Aaron S. Manka, Jonathan P. Dowling, C. M. Bowden +1 more

We review the effects of density dependent near dipole-dipole, or local field, interactions on lasing without inversion. In particular, we consider the nonlinear behaviour of the macroscopic electric susceptibility of a dense, coherently prepared, three-level Lambda system. For certain values of the atomic density, we observe enhancement of the absorptionless index of refraction and inversionless gain by more than two orders of magnitude. We also predict a piezophotonic switching effect whereby a small change in density induces the system to flip from a strong absorber into a local field enhanced inversionless amplifier.
