Abstract

Using the kinetic equation of subdynamics and the suitable time ordering rule we present a type of irreversible Liouville equation and nonlinear Liouville equation for open quantum systems. We also found a spectral relation for obtaining the non-equilibrium statistical distribution based on the boundary conditions which consistent with H theorem. Furthermore, a formalism of non-equilibrium project Green functions is given, and a non-perturbative method to solve the irreversible Liouville equation is studied. Finally, we give a model of spin-based quantum computing to show that the decoherence free states can be constructed using the non-perturbative approach.

Quantum Computing Using an Open System and Projected Subspace

Bi Qiao, Harry E. Ruda, Zhen, X. H.

Using the subdynamical kinetic equation for an open quantum system, a formulation is presented for performing decoherence-free (DF) quantum computing in Rigged Liouville Space (RLS). Three types of interactions were considered, and in each case, stationary and evolutionary states were evaluated for DF behavior in both the total space and the projected subspace. Projected subspaces were found using the subdynamics kinetic equation. It was shown that although the total space may be decoherent, the subspace can be DF. In the projected subspace, the evolution of the density operator may be time asymmetric. Hence, a formulation for performing quantum computing in RLS or rigged Hilbert space (RHS) was proposed, and a quantum Controlled-Not Logical gate with corresponding operations in RLS (RHS) was constructed. A generalized quantum Turing machine in RHS was also discussed. Key Words: Quantum Computing, Subdynamics, Rigged Liouvile Space, Decoherence, Open System PACS: 05.30.-d+85.30+82.20.Db+84.35.+i

Approach to Equilibrium of Statistical Systems: Classical Particles and Quantum Fields Off-Equilibrium

R. F. Álvarez-Estrada

Non-equilibrium evolution at absolute temperature T and approach to equilibrium of statistical systems in long-time (t) approximations, using both hierarchies and functional integrals, are reviewed. A classical non-relativistic particle in one spatial dimension, subject to a potential and a heat bath (hb), is described by the non-equilibrium reversible Liouville distribution (W) and equation, with a suitable initial condition. The Boltzmann equilibrium distribution Weq generates orthogonal (Hermite) polynomials Hn in momenta. Suitable moments Wn of W (using the Hn’s) yield a non-equilibrium three-term hierarchy (different from the standard Bogoliubov–Born–Green–Kirkwood–Yvon one), solved through operator continued fractions. After a long-t approximation, the Wn’s yield irreversibly approach to equilibrium. The approach is extended (without hb) to: (i) a non-equilibrium system of N classical non-relativistic particles interacting through repulsive short range potentials and (ii) a classical ϕ4 field theory (without hb). The extension to one non-relativistic quantum particle (with hb) employs the non-equilibrium Wigner function (WQ): difficulties related to non-positivity of WQ are bypassed so as to formulate approximately approach to equilibrium. A non-equilibrium quantum anharmonic oscillator is analyzed differently, through functional integral methods. The latter allows an extension to relativistic quantum ϕ4 field theory (a meson gas off-equilibrium, without hb), facing ultraviolet divergences and renormalization. Genuine simplifications of quantum ϕ4 theory at high T and large distances and long t occur; then, through a new argument for the field-theoretic case, the theory can be approximated by a classical ϕ4 one, yielding an approach to equilibrium.

Study of non-equilibrium Green's functions beyond Born approximation in open quantum systems

Katha Ganguly, Bijay Kumar Agarwalla

We provide a systematic approach to compute different kinds of non-equilibrium Green's functions for open quantum systems which are essentially two-point correlation functions in time. We reveal that the definition of Green's functions based on the Born approximation does not provide the correct results in the leading order of the system-bath coupling. We next provide a systematic correction term in Green's functions by going beyond the Born approximation and incorporating a finite correlation between the system and the bath. We primarily focus on two paradigmatic models of open quantum systems, namely, the dissipative Caldeira-Leggett model and the dissipative spin-boson model. We show that the inclusion of such a correction correctly reproduces the Kadanoff-Baym type equation for the so-called lesser or greater components of the Green's functions and provides the correct long-time result up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling, satisfying the detailed balance condition in thermal equilibrium. We further extend our study to a system coupled to multiple reservoirs simultaneously that are maintained at different temperatures and obtain expressions for non-equilibrium steady-state energy current, once again correct up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling.

Classical non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and an "open system dynamics" perspective on quantum-classical analogy

Yu Li

It is well known that the statistics of closed classical systems evolves according to the Liouville theorem. Here we study the dynamics of the marginal statistics of classical systems coupled to external degrees of freedom, by developing a time-local equation of motion using Green's functions and a series expansion method. We also compare this equation of motion with its supposed quantum counterpart, namely the quantum master equation, which we hope could shed some light on quantum-classical analogy (QCA) from the perspective of "open system dynamics". We notice an apparent exception to QCA in this case, as the first-order classical equation of motion derived herein contains a term that does not appear to have a quantum analogue. We also propose possible ways of getting around this tension, which may help re-establish QCA (in first perturbative order). We do not draw a definitive conclusion about QCA in the context of open system dynamics but hope to provide a starting point for investigations along this line.

Zhao-bing SU, Lu Yu, Guangzhao Zhou

A set of coupled equations for a quantum statistical system that determine self-consis-tently the order parameter, the energy spectrum, the dissipation and the distribution for both fermion field and collective excitation is suggested with a loop expansion formalism. They are applicable to non-equilibrium as well as equilibrium systems.
