Abstract

We report the observation of lambda-configuration electromagnetically induced transparency as well as optical pumping in rubidium-filled kagome-structure hollow-coated-core photonic crystal fiber. We show that a polydimethylsiloxane coating of the fiber core reduces the linewidth of the transparency below that which could be expected for an uncoated fiber. The measured 6 MHz linewidth was dominated by optical broadening.

High-resolution optical spectroscopy in a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber

Christopher Perrella, P. S. Light, Thomas M. Stace +2 more

In this paper, we present detailed high-resolution spectroscopy of rubidium (Rb) vapor confined within a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF). We find a very low level of additional frequency broadening associated with this confinement, with spectral features being only 1 MHz broader than the natural linewidth of the excited state. We show that this additional broadening is consistent solely with the atoms' transit across the fiber's optical mode. This low level of decoherence opens the door to a wide variety of applications including compact frequency standards and new types of quantum optical devices based on alkali-metal-loaded HC-PCFs. We highlight the low level of decoherence through observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in the confined vapor.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Rubidium-Filled HC-PCF

P. S. Light, Fetah Benabid, M. Marić +2 more

This paper report the observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in Rb-filled HC-PCF. We observe EIT in a lambda energy-level configuration with narrow linewidth, in contrast to that obtained by Ghosh et al. (2006). The fibre used in this experiment is large-pitch kagome-structured HC-PCF (Couny et al., 2006), with a core diameter of 11 mum. In order to prevent rubidium from being quickly adsorbed onto the silica walls, the fibre core was coated with PDMS by first filling it with a solution of 2% PDMS in diethyl-ether, and then evaporating the ether. The PDMS wall coating has a strongly beneficial effect in suppressing these dephasing collisions but further measurements at much lower coupling intensities are necessary to quantify how small the dephasing due to the coated wall is.

Electromagnetically-induced transparency grid in acetylene-filled hollow-core PCF

Fetah Benabid, P. S. Light, F. Couny +1 more

We report a set of experimental observations on electromagnetically induced transparency in acetylene filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, involving both Lambda-type and V-type interactions over several lines of the R-branch of the nu1 + nu3 ro-vibrational overtone band. Transparency as high as ~70% was achieved. A theoretical account of the sources of decoherence shows that collisions with the inner wall of the fiber core and laser frequency-jitter dominate the coherence decay.

Progress towards atomic vapor photonic microcells: Coherence and polarization relaxation measurements in coated and uncoated HC-PCF

Thomas D. Bradley, John J. McFerran, Jenny Jouin +3 more

We report a comparative study on dephasing mechanisms between inner core coated and uncoated sections of the same Kagome hypocycloid-shaped core hollow core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCF) filled with rubidium vapor. The comparison is performed by measuring the atomic polarization relaxation and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) linewidth in Rb loaded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) inner wall coated and bare silica core Kagome HC-PCF. The measurements show a polarization relaxation time of 32μs in a PDMS coated Kagome HC-PCF and 24μs in uncoated Kagome HC-PCF. A minimum EIT linewidth of 6.2±0.8MHz is achieved in PDMS coated Kagome HC-PCF, and 8.3±0.9 MHz for the uncoated Kagome HC-PCF.

Filling the cores of a hollow-core optical fibre with Rubidium has proven challenging. Here we report on progress to this end, and give experimental and theoretical evidence of substantial electromagnetically induced transparency at room temperature.

We compare electromagnetically induced transparencies in large-core anti-relaxation materials inner-wall coatings Kagome HC-PCF with thermal Rb confinement in situ. A minimum transparency linewidth of ~150 KHz in OTS coated fiber was observed.
