Generating Bragg solitons in a coherent medium

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the possibility of producing Bragg solitons in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium. We show that a coherent medium can be engineered to be a Bragg grating with a large Kerr nonlinearity through proper arrangements of light fields. The parameters of the medium can be easily controlled through adjusting the intensities and detunings of lasers. This scheme may provide an opportunity to study the dynamics of Bragg solitons with low power lights.

Solitons formed by dark-state polaritons in an electromagnetic induced transparency

Xiong-Jun Liu, Hui Jing, Mo‐Lin Ge

We show the possible stable soliton generation for the dark-state polaritons in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium composed of $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atoms. Whether the solitons are dark or bright can be controlled by the coupling field intensity and the one-photon detuning of the probe field. The velocity, spatial, and time widths of the solitons can also be adjusted by the coupling light.

Spatial Weak-Light Solitons in an Electromagnetically Induced Nonlinear Waveguide

Tao Hong

We show that a weak probe light beam can form spatial solitons in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium composed of four-level atoms and a coupling light field. We find that the coupling light beam can induce a highly controllable nonlinear waveguide and exert very strong effects on the dynamical behavior of the solitons. Hence, in the EIT medium, it is not only possible to produce spatial solitons at very low light intensities but also simultaneously control these solitons by using the coupling-light-induced nonlinear waveguide.

Light Controlling Light with Enhanced Kerr Nonlinearity

Min Xiao, Hai Wang, David J. Goorskey

The Kerr nonlinear index of refraction of a three-level atomic medium can be greatly enhanced by atomic coherence induced by two laser beams. Such electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) media can be used to generate efficient nonlinear optical processes at low light intensities. Control and enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity in EIT media can be useful in all-optical communication, all-optical computing, and quantum information processing.

Lattice Solitons in Optical Lattice Controlled by Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Wei Pang, Jianxiong Wu, Zhonghui Yuan +2 more

An optical four-level atomic discrete system in a solid through optical induction is proposed. A theoretical scheme to produce lattice solitons (LSs) in the system is presented by means of the effects of enhanced self-phase modulation and the giant kerr effect in the electromagnetically induced transparency. The power density and the photon flux can be tuned to a very low level by the controlling field and the soliton can propagate with very slow group velocity. By changing the sign of the detuning Δ 1 , both in-phase and π out-of-phase LSs can be produced in this system.

Coherent effects in Bragg reflectors: light localization and oscillating solitary waves near absorption resonances

Igor V. Mel’nikov, C. M. Bowden, Michael Scalora +1 more

Summary form only given. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in nonlinear and quantum optics of photonic bandgap structures. Some of this attention has centered on the properties of gap solitary waves, which are light pulses tuned at a Bragg frequency within a forbidden bandgap of the periodic structure. These solitary waves may occur in a periodically modulated medium with a Kerr-like nonlinearity, and in the resonance grating as a two-wave soliton of self-induced transparency. In the later case, the coupled-mode Maxwell-Bloch equations which describe the on-resonance coherent interaction of the intense field with a periodic structure of thin layers of two-level atoms in the ground state, lead to an integrable sine-Gordon equation. In our study, we concentrate on the nonintegrable case, that is, amplification in a resonant Bragg structure by means of a comprehensive analysis that includes and numerical modelling of Dicke superradiance and coherent amplification.
