Observation of Coherent Transient Birefringence in C S2 Vapor

Abstract

We have observed short-duration birefringence in C${\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ vapor 38 and 76 psec after excitation with a mode-locked (\ensuremath{\sim} 5 psec duration) 1.06-\ensuremath{\mu}m glass: ${\mathrm{Nd}}^{3+}$ laser pulse. These bursts are attributed to the time evolution of a coherent sum of rotational superposition states.

Observation of a 19-psec polarization beat

Joshua E. Rothenberg, D. Grischkowsky

We have observed polarization beats by simultaneously exciting both the D(1) (589.6-nm) and the D(2) (589-nm) lines of sodium in a vapor with a 0.4-psec resonant laser pulse. This impact excitation of both D lines produces two oscillating macroscopic polarizations, which interfere with each other and procedure a beat note at their difference frequency in the intensity of the light emitted from the cell. The beat period of 1.9 psec is the fastest ever observed optically.

Free-precession decay of two-photon-induced coherence in Ca vapor

Masahiro Matsuoka, Hiroki Nakatsuka, Jumpei Okada

Calcium vapor has been excited by two-photon absorption of a mode-locked dye-laser pulse, and emission from a coherent superposition state of the $4{s}^{2}^{1}S_{0}$ and $4s3d^{1}D_{2}$ levels has been observed using a delayed off-resonant interrogation pulse in the picosecond regime. The emission signal intensity was measured as a function of the delay time of the interrogation pulse, and showed a peak well delayed from that of the dye-laser pulse. This reflects the fact that the induced coherence is expressed by a time integral of the excitation. The emission signal was then found to decay as a result of the Doppler effect. The above process is analyzed by Bloch and Maxwell equations. This is the first reported observation of the coherence of an atomic system induced by two-photon absorption, a coherence which persists after the passage of the excitation pulse and decays inhomogeneously as a result of thermal motion. In carrying out the experiment, deformation of the input dye-laser pulse during propagation through the two-photon resonant medium was carefully avoided.

Ultrashort Optical Pulses and Their Generation in Resonant Media (Scientific Summary)

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, A. A. Shimko +2 more

Our recent studies of methods for obtaining ultrashort light pulses and analysis of the impact of ultrashort optical pulses on classical and quantum micro-objects with the identification of the determining role of the degree of unipolarity of pulses (maximum for strictly unipolar pulses) in the efficiency of direct laser acceleration of charged particles and excitation of atoms and molecules have been reviewed. Special attention has been paid to the coherent mode locking regime in lasers, which is implemented when the laser pulse duration is less than the relaxation time of the working transition in media with resonance amplification and absorption (laser analog of the phenomenon of self-induced transparency). Experimental data on coherent mode locking in a titanium-sapphire laser with a cell with rubidium vapor at self-induced transparency in rubidium have been presented. The interaction of ultrashort pulses in resonant media has also been analyzed.

We studied a propagation of comb of optical pulses produced by a mode-locked diode laser in rubidium vapor. EIT was observed when pulse repetition rate is subharmonic of the hyperfine splitting of the ground state.

Optical Coherent Transients by Laser Frequency Switching: Subnanosecond Studies

Ralph G. DeVoe, Richard G. Brewer

By extending the laser-frequency-switching technique to a 100-psec time scale, we have observed for the Na ${D}_{1}$ line the first-order free-induction decay, its inhomogeneous dephasing time ${{T}_{2}}^{*}$, its interference with the nonlinear free-induction decay, and a 1.8-GHz interference beat of the ground-state hfs. Detailed theoretical predictions of these new coherence effects are faithfully observed.
