Density-functional approach to spin-density waves

Abstract

We propose a novel density-functional approach to antiferromagnetism and spin-density waves. Nonlocal antiferromagnetic correlations and possible noncollinear spin configurations are incorporated via a staggered density, which enters the formalism on the same footing as the particle density. We establish the pertinent generalization of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem, derive the associated Kohn-Sham equations, outline the construction of approximations for the corresponding exchange and correlation functional, discuss the relation of the present method to other density-functional approaches, and report a first application to a simple model system.

Density-functional theory for spin-density waves and antiferromagnetic systems

Klaus Capelle, L. Nunes de Oliveira

An extension of density-functional theory, designed to treat spin-density waves and antiferromagnetic systems, is presented. The nonlocal nature of the antiferromagnetic correlations and possible noncollinearity in spin space are incorporated via an additional fundamental variable, the staggered density, which supplements the spin densities of conventional density-functional theory. Inclusion of this variable is justified by both physical and methodological considerations. We prove the corresponding Hohenberg-Kohn theorem, derive the pertinent Kohn-Sham equations, and present several approximate functionals depending explicitly on the staggered density. As a first test the formalism is applied to two simple model systems, a one-dimensional electron gas with a short-range interaction, and the three-dimensional electron gas with Coulomb interactions. These calculations serve to test the developed formalism, but also already allow us to draw a number of conclusions regarding the stability and nature of possible spin-density wave states in homogeneous electron systems.

Hohenberg-Kohn theorem for nonlocal external potentials

Thomas L. Gilbert

The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is extended to the case that the external potential is nonlocal. It is shown that, in this more general case, a nondegenerate ground-state wave function is a universal functional of the one-particle density kernel $\ensuremath{\mu}(x,{x}^{\ensuremath{'}})$, but probably not of the particle density $n(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}})=\ensuremath{\Sigma}{s}^{}\ensuremath{\mu}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}s,\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}s)$. The variational equations for the local and nonlocal cases are compared. The former must be replaced by a variational equation for an equivalent system of noninteracting particles, following a prescription of Kohn and Sham, in order to obtain a Schr\"odinger-like form, and contains only local potentials. The latter may be obtained directly in Schr\"odinger-like form, but the exchange-correlation potential is nonlocal. If the nonlocal pseudo-Hamiltonian exists [i.e., if the functional derivative $\frac{\ensuremath{\delta}E}{\ensuremath{\delta}\ensuremath{\mu}(x,{x}^{\ensuremath{'}})}$ exists for a nondegenerate ground-state density kernel], then the eigenfunctions of the pseudo-Hamiltonian are natural spin orbitals, and all partially occupied orbitals ($0<〈{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{i}|\ensuremath{\mu}|{\ensuremath{\varphi}}_{i}〉<1$) belong to the same degenerate eigenvalue of the pseudo-Hamiltonian. Finally, it is shown, as a corollary of Coleman's theorem for $N$-representable density kernels, that any finite non-negative differentiable function is an $N$-representable particle density.

Strong Correlation in Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory

Francesc Malet, Paola Gori‐Giorgi

We use the exact strong-interaction limit of the Hohenberg-Kohn energy density functional to approximate the exchange-correlation energy of the restricted Kohn-Sham scheme. Our approximation corresponds to a highly nonlocal density functional whose functional derivative can be easily constructed, thus transforming exactly, in a physically transparent way, an important part of the electron-electron interaction into an effective local one-body potential. We test our approach on quasi-one-dimensional systems, showing that it captures essential features of strong correlation that restricted Kohn-Sham calculations using the currently available approximations cannot describe.

Generalized Kohn-Sham Density-Functional Theory via Effective Action Formalism

Marat Valiev, Gayanath Fernando

We present a rigorous formulation of generalized Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This provides a straightforward Kohn-Sham description of many-body systems based not only on particle-density but also on any other observable. We illustrate the formalism for the case of a particle-density based description of a nonrelativistic many-electron system. We obtain a simple diagrammatic expansion of the exchange-correlation functional in terms of Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies; develop systematic Kohn-Sham formulation for one-electron propagators and many-body excitation energies. This work is ideally suited for practical applications and provides a rigorous basis for a systematic development of the existing body of first-principles calculations in a controllable fashion.

A closed local-orbital unified description of DFT and many-body effects

Fernando Flores, Diego Soler‐Polo, José Ortega

Abstract Density functional theory (DFT) is usually formulated in terms of the electron density as a function of position n(r). Here we discuss an alternative formulation of DFT in terms of the orbital occupation numbers {n α } associated with a local-orbital orthonormal basis set {ϕ α }. First, we discuss how the building blocks of DFT, namely the Hohenberg–Kohn theorems, the Levy–Lieb approach and the Kohn–Sham method, can be adapted for a description in terms of {n α }. In particular, the total energy is now a function of {n α }, E[{n α }], and a Kohn–Sham-like Hamiltonian is derived introducing the effects of the electron–electron interactions via effective potentials, { V α eff = ∂ E e e [ { n β } ] / ∂ n α } . In a second step we consider the Hartree and exchange energies and discuss how to describe them, in the spirit of a DFT approach, in terms of the orbital occupation numbers. In this contribution special attention is paid to the description of the (intra-atomic) correlation energy and corresponding correlation potentials {V corr,α }. For this purpose, a model system is analyzed in detail, whereby an atomic Hamiltonian interacts with the environment via a simplified model; the use of this model allows us to obtain the correlation energy and potentials (in terms of {n α }) for different cases corresponding to low, intermediate and high electron correlations.

Density-Functional Theory for Time-Dependent Systems

Erich Runge, Eberhard K. U. Gross

A density-functional formalism comparable to the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham theory of the ground state is developed for arbitrary time-dependent systems. It is proven that the single-particle potential $v(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}t)$ leading to a given $v$-representable density $n(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}t)$ is uniquely determined so that the corresponding map $v\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n$ is invertible. On the basis of this theorem, three schemes are derived to calculate the density: a set of hydrodynamical equations, a stationary action principle, and an effective single-particle Schr\"odinger equation.
