Abstract

By means of a perturbation method, the photon statistics of the free electron laser starting with an arbitrary initial state can be calculated. And especially for an initial vacuum. We give the expression of photon statistics to first order in the recoil in this paper.

Photon statistics of a free-electron laser

Wilhelm Becker, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

A fully quantized theory of the free-electron laser in the small-signal regime is presented which allows for a calculation of the photon statistics. For an initial vacuum, we find photon antibunching if the electron momentum is below resonance. We conjecture that, in general, the free-electron laser preserves coherent states only in the absence of gain.

Quantum-statistical properties of an FEL amplifier. Technical report No. 35, 1 October 1984-30 September 1985

We discuss the problem of photon quantum statistics of a single particle Free Electron Laser (FEL) amplifier in the small-signal cold beam regime to first order in the electron quantum recoil. The initial radiation wave is an arbitrary coherent state. We show that Glauber coherence is not preserved by the FEL interaction if the initial coherent state is not the vacuum even if we neglect the electron quantum recoil (absence of gain). We evaluate the first two moments of the final photon distribution and find sub (super)-poissonian photo statistics for negative (positive) resonance parameter.

Photon statistics and squeezing of a free-electron laser for an initial Bose-Einstein distribution and for an initial nearly pure state

Suranjana Rai, Jagdish Rai, S. Chopra

We investigate numerically the photon statistics and squeezing properties of the free-electron laser. In one model we assume the initial distribution of photons to be thermal (Bose-Einstein distribution). Our results for this model indicate no photon antibunching. We obtain similar results for another model, where we have started from an initial distribution which is nearly a pure state (the \ensuremath{\alpha}-\ensuremath{\beta} model). However, both these models exhibit squeezing.

Steady-state photon statistics of a free-electron laser

Julio R. Gea-Banacloche

The photon statistics of a free-electron laser at steady state are investigated in the classical regime under the assumption of small gain per pass. A Fokker-Planck--type equation is derived for the photon-number distribution. Strong-signal results are presented, together with analytical expressions for the photon-number fluctuations, and the results are compared to the ordinary laser. It is shown that the radiation is not in a Glauber coherent state, and that the intensity fluctuations are classical, i.e., independent of \ensuremath{\Elzxh}.

Photon statistics and squeezing properties of a free-electron laser

Suranjana Rai, S. Chopra

It is shown that the field emitted by a free-electron laser (FEL) in the low-gain regime exhibits antibunching over a wide range, for an initial Poisson distribution of probability amplitudes. We also investigate the variance of the momentum coordinate, and find the FEL state to be squeezed.
