Steady-state photon statistics of a free-electron laser

Abstract

The photon statistics of a free-electron laser at steady state are investigated in the classical regime under the assumption of small gain per pass. A Fokker-Planck--type equation is derived for the photon-number distribution. Strong-signal results are presented, together with analytical expressions for the photon-number fluctuations, and the results are compared to the ordinary laser. It is shown that the radiation is not in a Glauber coherent state, and that the intensity fluctuations are classical, i.e., independent of \ensuremath{\Elzxh}.

Quantum statistical properties of an FEL amplifier

G. Dattoli, Juan Carlos Gallardo, Alberto Renieri +1 more

We discuss the problem of photon quantum statistics of a single particle free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier in the small-signal cold beam regime to first order in the electron quantum recoil. The initial radiation wave is an arbitrary coherent state. We show that Glauber coherence is not preserved by the FEL interaction if the initial coherent state is not the vacuum, even if we neglect the electron quantum recoil (absence of gain). We evaluate the first two moments of the final photon distribution and find sub- (super)-Poissonian photon statistics for a negative (positive) resonance parameter.

Photon statistics of a free-electron laser

Wilhelm Becker, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

A fully quantized theory of the free-electron laser in the small-signal regime is presented which allows for a calculation of the photon statistics. For an initial vacuum, we find photon antibunching if the electron momentum is below resonance. We conjecture that, in general, the free-electron laser preserves coherent states only in the absence of gain.

Effect of cooperative atomic interactions on photon statistics in a single-mode laser

Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

The effect of cooperative atomic interactions on the photon statistics in a single-mode laser is studied on the basis of an equation of motion for the reduced-density operator of the field that was recently derived by Huang and Mandel. The corresponding antinormal ordering distribution function is shown to satisfy a Fokker-Planck equation. The steady-state solution of this equation is used to determine the photon-number distribution, the average intensity, and the intensity fluctuation.

Steady-state analysis of a two-mode laser with multiplicative white noise

Shiqun Zhu

The steady-state fluctuations of an inhomogeneously broadened two-mode laser with both additive and multiplicative white noise are investigated theoretically. A Fokker-Planck equation of the intensity-distribution function is presented. Analytic expressions of the autocorrelation and cross correlation of the steady-state two-mode intensities are derived for equal pump parameters of the two modes. Large intensity fluctuations occur when the laser is operated below threshold. However, when the laser is operated far above threshold, there is almost no difference between the laser models with and without multiplicative noise.

Statistical fluctuations in a saturation laser model with correlated noises

Shibo Chen, Mei Dong-Cheng

We study the effects of correlations between quantum and pump noises on fluctuations of the laser intensity in a saturation laser model. An approximative Fokker–Planck equation and analytic expressions of the steady-state probability distribution function (SPD) of the laser system are derived. Based on the SPD, the normalized mean, the normalized variance, and the normalized skewness of the steady-state laser intensity are calculated numerically. The results indicate that (i) the correlation strength λ of correlated noises always enhances the fluctuation of laser intensity; (ii) the correlation time τ of correlated noises strengthens the fluctuation of laser intensity for the below-threshold case but τ weakens it for the above-threshold case.
