Abstract

In light of the interference experiment of Bose–Einstein condensates, we present an anharmonic external potential model to study ground state properties of Bose–Einstein condensates. The ground state energy and the chemical potential have been analytically obtained, which are lower than those in harmonic trap. Additionally, it is found that the anharmonic strength of the external potential has an important effect on density and velocity distributions of the ground state for the Thomas–Fermi model.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a quartic potential:static and dynamic properties

Chaudhary, G.K., Amit Kumar Chattopadhyay, R. Ramakumar

In this paper, we present a theoretical study of a Bose-Einstein condensate of interacting bosons in a quartic trap in one, two, and three dimensions. Using Thomas-Fermi approximation, suitably complemented by numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study the ground sate condensate density profiles, the chemical potential, the effects of cross-terms in the quartic potential, temporal evolution of various energy components of the condensate, and width oscillations of the condensate. Results obtained are compared with corresponding results for a bose condensate in a harmonic confinement.

Study of Zero Temperature Ground State Properties of the Repulsive Bose-Einstein Condensate in an Anharmonic Trap

Pankaj Kumar Debnath

The zero-temperature ground state properties of experimental 87Rb condensate are studied in a harmonic plus quartic trap [ V(r) = ½mω2r2 + λr4 ]. The anharmonic parameter (λ) is slowly tuned from harmonic to anharmonic. For each choice of λ, the many-particle Schrödinger equation is solved using the potential harmonic expansion method and determines the lowest effective many-body potential. We utilize the correlated two-body basis function, which keeps all possible two-body correlations. The use of van der Waals interaction gives realistic pictures. We calculate kinetic energy, trapping potential energy, interaction energy, and total ground state energy of the condensate in this confining potential, modelled experimentally. The motivation of the present study is to investigate the crucial dependency of the properties of an interacting quantum many-body system on λ. The average size of the condensate has also been calculated to observe how the stability of repulsive condensate depends on anharmonicity. In particular, our calculation presents a clear physical picture of the repulsive condensate in an anharmonic trap.

Anharmonicity-induced phase transition of spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

Kezhi Zhang, Yan Chen

Abstract In the mean-field framework, using variational analysis and numerical simulation, we investigate the effect of anharmonic trap and atomic interaction on the ground-state phases of spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in the harmonic plus quartic potential. Then, the Gaussian wave function is selected to predict the analytical conditions of the phase transition boundary of the SO coupled BECs by using the variational method. We found that the anharmonicity of the external potential induces the SO coupled BECs to undergo a phase transition between the zero-momentum phase and plane-wave phase, which is more pronounced in the cases of weak harmonic potential or strong interspecies interaction. Since the potential energy of the system modified by anharmonicity competes with other energies of the system, the anharmonicity changes the critical SO coupling strength and Raman coupling strength when the phase transition occurs. At the same time, the critical anharmonic coefficients are also affected by interspecies interaction and harmonic potential. Finally, the correctness of the theoretical results is verified by numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Ground State of Bose-Einstein Condensation in F-G-H Method

Dapeng Wu

We study distribution of particles in Bose-Einstein condensation and ground state energy of condensate by solving a G-P equation with FourierGrid-Hamiltonian(F-G-H) method. It is shown that particle density in condensate center increases and radius of condensate decreases as intensity of power-law potential or frequency of harmonic potential is increased or repulsive interaction between particles is decreased. The ground state energy of BEC increases with increasing of total particle number, repulsive interaction between particles, frequency of harmonic potential or intensity of powerlaw potential.Thomas-Fermi approximation results approximate to numerical results as particle number increases. It is shown that Thomas-Fermi approximation is a good method with large particle numbers. For less particle numbers, numerical method should be used.

Variational Monte Carlo analysis of Bose–Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional trap

Zheng Rong-Jie, Jing Jin, Yi Ping Tang

The ground-state properties of a system with a small number of interacting bosons over a wide range of densities are investigated. The system is confined in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic trap, where the interaction between bosons is treated as a hard-core potential. By using variational Monte Carlo method, we diagonalize the one-body density matrix of the system to obtain the ground-state energy, condensate wavefunction and the condensate fraction. We find that in the dilute limit the depletion of central condensate in the 2D system is larger than in a 3D system for the same interaction strength; however as the density increases, the depletion at the centre of 2D trap will be equal to or even lower than that at the centre of 3D trap, which is in agreement with the anticipated in Thomas–Fermi approximation. In addition, in the 2D system the total condensate depletion is still larger than in a 3D system for the same scattering length.
