Abstract

The effects of incoherent pumping on the phase control of amplification without inversion (AWI) are investigated in a three-level Λ system with a weak probe field. It is shown that, similar to spontaneously generated coherence, incoherent pumping is necessary to make the system become sensitive to the relative phase. We find that the region in which AWI can be exhibited is widened with the enhancement of incoherent pumping, and that the amplitude of the probe gain can be also changed where there exists an extremum of the amplitude for a given probe detuning.

Phase control of light amplification without inversion in a Λ system with spontaneously generated coherence

Jin‐Hui Wu, Jin-Yue Gao

Due to interaction with the vacuum of the radiation field, near-degenerate lower levels in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system have an additional coherence term, the spontaneously generated coherence term. In this paper, we investigate effects of spontaneouly generated coherence on inversionless gain in the presence of a weak probe, a strong coherent field, and an incoherent pump. We find that the inversionless gain stems from both spontaneously generated coherence and dynamically induced coherence, but the former contributes more to the inversionless gain. In particular, we can modulate the inversionless gain just by changing the relative phase between the two fields.

Phase control of light amplification in steady and transient processes in an inverted-Y atomic system with spontaneously generated coherence

Si-Cong Tian, Cunzhu Tong, Ren-Gang Wan +7 more

We investigate the effects of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on both the steady and transient gain properties in a four-level inverted-Y-type atomic system in the presence of a weak probe, two strong coherent fields, and an incoherent pump. For the steady process, we find that the inversionless gain mainly origins from SGC. In particular, we can modulate the inversionless gain by changing the relative phase between the two fields. Moreover, the amplitude of the gain peak can be enhanced and the additional gain peak can appear by changing the detuning of the coupling field. As for the transient process, the transient gain properties can also be dramatically affected by the SGC. Compared to the case without SGC, the transient gain can be greatly enhanced with completely eliminated transient absorption by choosing the proper relative phase between the two fields. And the inverted-Y-type system with SGC can be simulated in both atomic and semiconductor quantum well systems avoiding the conditions of SGC.

Phase control of light amplification without inversion in two Lambda-type atomic systems

Hai-Hua Wang, Jin‐Hui Wu, Jin-Yue Gao

We examine the gain property of a probe field interacting with two different three-level Lambda-type atomic systems with an open loop or a close loop. In the atomic system with an open loop, there exists quantum interference resulting from spontaneous emissions to two near-degenerate lower levels from a common upper level, and the weak probe field can be greatly amplified due to the spontaneously generated coherence. Moreover, the probe gain becomes sensitive to the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields, so we can realize phase control of the probe gain in principle. In the atomic system with a close loop, we use a microwave field to couple the two well-spaced lower levels so that quantum coherence similar to SGC can be generated. In this atomic system, we also can achieve the phase-sensitive probe gain due to the quantum interference between two different absorption channels for the probe field. Note, only in the case of three-photon resonance, this close-loop atomic system can reach a steady state. While in the case of three-photon off-resonance, the probe gain without inversion always oscillates periodically versus time, thus no steady-state probe gain can be achieved.

The effects of the incoherent pumping field on the phase control of group velocity

Mohammad Mahmoudi, Mostafa Sahrai, H. Tajalli

This paper studies the effects of the incoherent pumping field and the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on the phase control of group velocity. The effects of a relative phase between probe and coupling fields on the absorption and the dispersion are then discussed. It is shown that the phase dependence of the group velocity not only depends on the existence of the SGC, but also depends on the existence of the incoherent pump field. We show that for the weak probe field, and in the presence of SGC, the existence of the incoherent pump field is a necessary condition for the phase control of the dispersion, the absorption and the group index.

Control over group velocity in a three-level closed Λ system via spontaneously generated coherence and dynamically induced coherence

Sulagna Dutta, Krishna Rai Dastidar

The light propagation of a probe field in a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping has been studied when both dynamically induced coherence (DIC) and spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) play a significant role. We have investigated the group velocity of probe field and hence the group index of a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping when both DIC and SGC play a significant role. We have shown that by varying the probe field Rabi frequency one can control the interference between these two coherences which leads to different nonlinear response (amplification without inversion, electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption) leading to different (positive and negative) dispersion. Hence control over switching of group velocity from subluminal to superluminal and vice versa can be achieved. We have also shown that when the contributions from both the coherences are comparable, the dependence of group velocity of probe field in a three-level Λ system with incoherent pumping on phase difference between probe and coherent fields is different from that obtained under the weak probe field condition. Going beyond the weak probe field approximation we have derived analytical expressions for group velocity and hence the group index in the steady state limit (keeping all orders of system parameters) to generalize the analysis, and these expressions can be used for any set of system parameters without any restriction. The numerical values obtained by solving the density matrix equations agree well with these exact analytical values at a large time limit. We have proposed a scheme for experimental realization of EIT and hence subluminal light propagation in molecules by invoking spontaneously generated coherence.
