Abstract

We examine the gain property of a probe field interacting with two different three-level Lambda-type atomic systems with an open loop or a close loop. In the atomic system with an open loop, there exists quantum interference resulting from spontaneous emissions to two near-degenerate lower levels from a common upper level, and the weak probe field can be greatly amplified due to the spontaneously generated coherence. Moreover, the probe gain becomes sensitive to the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields, so we can realize phase control of the probe gain in principle. In the atomic system with a close loop, we use a microwave field to couple the two well-spaced lower levels so that quantum coherence similar to SGC can be generated. In this atomic system, we also can achieve the phase-sensitive probe gain due to the quantum interference between two different absorption channels for the probe field. Note, only in the case of three-photon resonance, this close-loop atomic system can reach a steady state. While in the case of three-photon off-resonance, the probe gain without inversion always oscillates periodically versus time, thus no steady-state probe gain can be achieved.

Phase- and amplitude-dependent inversionless gain of the probe field controlled by a three-level closed loop system

In order to achieve the phase-sensitive probe gain without population inversion, we investigate a four-level atomic system, where the probe field is controlled by a three-level closed loop subsystem. In the case of three-photon resonance, large steady-state inversionless probe gain can be obtained. Owing to the quantum interference, the probe gain is sensitive to the relative phase of the three-level closed loop subsystem. The intensities of the fields of the three-level closed loop subsystem are also important factors that can result in different gain behaviors of the probe field.

Probe gain via four-wave mixing based on spontaneously generated coherence

Hong Wei Yang, Ting-Gui Zhang, Yan Zhang

We have studied the probe gain via a double-Λ atomic system with a pair of closely lying lower levels in the presence of two probe and two coherent pump fields. The inversionless gain can be realized by using nondegenerate four-wave mixing under the condition of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) owing to near-degenerate lower levels. Note that by using SGC, two probe fields can be amplified with more remarkable amplitudes, and the gain spectra of an extremely narrow linewidth can be obtained. Last but not least, our results show that the probe gain is quite sensitive to relative phases due to the SGC presence which allows one to modulate the gain spectra periodically by phase modulation, and can also be influenced by all laser field intensities and frequencies, and the angles between dipole elements.

Due to the quantum interference effect, the inversionless gain is sensitive to the relative phase of the three-level closed loop subsystem. Further, the field intensity of the three-level closed loop subsystem is also an important parameter that can affect gain characteristic of the probe field.

Phase control of light amplification in steady and transient processes in an inverted-Y atomic system with spontaneously generated coherence

Si-Cong Tian, Cunzhu Tong, Ren-Gang Wan +7 more

We investigate the effects of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on both the steady and transient gain properties in a four-level inverted-Y-type atomic system in the presence of a weak probe, two strong coherent fields, and an incoherent pump. For the steady process, we find that the inversionless gain mainly origins from SGC. In particular, we can modulate the inversionless gain by changing the relative phase between the two fields. Moreover, the amplitude of the gain peak can be enhanced and the additional gain peak can appear by changing the detuning of the coupling field. As for the transient process, the transient gain properties can also be dramatically affected by the SGC. Compared to the case without SGC, the transient gain can be greatly enhanced with completely eliminated transient absorption by choosing the proper relative phase between the two fields. And the inverted-Y-type system with SGC can be simulated in both atomic and semiconductor quantum well systems avoiding the conditions of SGC.

Phase control of inversionless gain in a closed atomic system with Doppler broadening

Hui Ma, Bu Fan-Ge, Hong-xia Qiao +3 more

We studied the controlling role played by the relative phase between the probe and driving fields on inversionless gain of the probe field in a closed and Doppler broadened Λ-type three-level system with spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). It was found that:(1) Regardless of the driving field being in or off resonance, and regardless of the probe and driving fields being co- or counter- propagating, the gain maximum value always varies periodically with variation of the relative phase with the period 2π. (2) When the driving field is in resonance, the gain maximum value decreases monotonicly with Doppler width increasing, and moreover, the decreasing in the counter-propagation case is faster than that in the co-propagation case. When the driving field is off resonance, the gain maximum value does not monotonicly decrease or increase with Doppler width increasing. In both above cases, the largest inversionless gain can be gotten by adjusting the relative phase. (3) The contribution of SGC to the inversionless gain is much larger than that of the dynamically induced coherence.

The coherence of a four-level Λ-type system with spontaneously generated coherence(SGC) is studied. With a weak probe and a strong coupling fields, whether the atomic system is on two-photon resonance or not, there is light without population inversion(LWI) on the probe field. On two-photon resonance,LWI is strengthened by SGC.On non-two-photon resonance,LWI can be controlled simply by adjusting the parameter of SGC and the two-upper-level separation.Meanwhile, the analytical solutions to the SGC parameter where LWI occurs are given in both cases.
