Abstract

In this work we analyze the collective behavior of a large number of two-level atoms confined in a cavity of a given volume V as they are manipulated with classical electromagnetic fields. We evaluate the temporal evolution of several observables like the intensity for spontaneous and stimulated emission, dispersion relations, and squeezing in the coherent states thus constructed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Generation and properties of collective atomic Schrödinger-cat states

Christopher C. Gerry, R. Grobe

We propose a method for generating collective atomic Schr\"odinger-cat states formed as superpositions of the Bloch (or atomic coherent) states in the context of cavity QED. We then study the properties of these states and show the effects of the superpositions on spontaneous and stimulated emission, the atomic dipole moment, spin squeezing, and coherence.

Atomic squeezing under collective emission

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, Elizaveta P. Yukalova

Atomic squeezing is studied for the case of large systems of radiating atoms, when collective effects are well developed. All temporal stages are analyzed, starting with the quantum stage of spontaneous emission, passing through the coherent stage of superradiant emission, and going to the relaxation stage ending with stationary solutions. A method of governing the temporal behavior of the squeezing factor is suggested. The influence of a squeezed effective vacuum on the characteristics of collective emission is also investigated.

Dynamics of the collective spontaneous emission of two three-level atoms in a cavity

Eugene K. Bashkirov

Based on the master equation for the density matrix, the collective spontaneous emission of two A-type three-level atoms interacting with two modes of a quantum electromagnetic field in a finite- Q cavity is studied. The evolution of the emission intensity for each mode is found for the case where both atoms are initially in the excited state.

New bosonic excitation operators in many-electron wave functions

Katsuhisa Ohta

New excitation operators which have perfect bosonic symmetry are constructed for many-electron wave functions by regarding the system of many electrons as that of many species of bosons. Any electronic configurations can be generated by the new bosonic “void” operators. A coherent state is constructed with the bosonic operators and is adopted as a trial function for the time-dependent variational principle. The equation of motion which has exactly the same form as Hamilton's equation in classical mechanics is obtained with the complex variational parameters, the number of which is equal to the number of electrons. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Entanglement and generation of superpositions of atomic coherent states

J. Récamier, Octavio Castaños, Rocío Jáuregui +1 more

After making a general description of the properties of macroscopic superpositions of collective atomic states, we present a detailed analysis of a method for their experimental realization recently proposed by C.C. Gerry and R. Grobe [Phys. Rev. A 56, 2390 (1997)] which is based on cavity QED techniques involving the manipulation of electromagnetic and matter fields. Specific conditions and limitations of the procedure are discussed.
