Abstract

We investigate the effects of nonlocality in time of interaction on the dynamics of open quantum systems. We show that the generalized quantum dynamics allows one to take into account nonlocality in time of the interaction of an atom with its surroundings in describing spectral line broadening.

Effects of nonlocality in time of interaction of an atom with its surroundings on spectral line broadening

We investigate effects of nonlocality in time of interaction of an atom with its surroundings on the spectral line broadening. By using an exactly solvable model, we show that these effects can be very significant: In some cases nonlocality in time of interaction of an atom with its surroundings can give rise to the spectral line splitting.

Nonlocality of QED interaction and high-energy behavior of total cross sections

The difficulties, associated with UV divergences, of a consistent QED theory in describing the natural broadening of spectral line profiles of atoms are discussed. The way of the solution this problem by using nonlocal QED interaction is studied. Experimental consequences of such a nonlocality are discussed.

Generalized quantum dynamics and interaction of atoms with quantum fields

R. Kh. Gainutdinov, Aigul A. Mutygullina

We investigate the effects of the nonlocality in time of the effective interaction of atoms with quantum fields, arising after integrating out certain degrees of freedom. We show that these effects can be described, in a natural way, within the formalism of the generalized quantum dynamics developed in [J. Phys. A 32, 5657 (1999)]. The new possibilities that the generalized quantum dynamics opens for solving the problem are demonstrated by using the example of a muonic atom interacting with the electronic vacuum.

Nonlocal interactions and quantum dynamics

R. Kh. Gainutdinov

The problem of describing the dynamics of quantum systems generated by a nonlocal-in-time interaction is considered. It is shown that the use of the Feynman approach to quantum theory in combination with the canonical approach allows one to extend quantum dynamics to describe the time evolution in the case of such interactions. In this way, using only the current concepts of quantum theory, a generalized equation of motion for state vectors is derived. In the case where the fundamental interaction generating the dynamics in a system is local in time, this equation is equivalent to the Schrödinger equation. Explicit examples are given for an exactly solvable model. The proposed formalism is shown to provide a new insight into the problem of the description of nonlocal interactions in quantum field theory. It is shown that such a property of the equation of motion, such as nonlocality in time, may be important for describing hadron-hadron interactions at low and intermediate energies.

Shapes of pressure- and Doppler-broadened spectral lines in the core and near wings

R. Ciuryło

The Rautian-Sobelman approach describing the collision-Doppler shape of spectral line that takes into account both soft and hard velocity-changing collisions is extended to the case when correlation between Doppler and collision broadening as well as the dispersion line asymmetry should be considered. Numerical calculations show that speed-dependent effects can produce the additional line narrowing as well as broadening and also the line asymmetry. It is shown that speed-dependent profiles based on the soft and hard collision models differ much more one from another than those which omit the speed-dependent effects.
