Effects of spacing on dynamics of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in two finite traps

Hong Li, D. N Wang, Yongshan Cheng

Interaction between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is investigated by the variational approach in two finite traps, and the effects of the spacing between the two traps on dynamics of the two BECs are analyzed. The spacing determines the stable condition of stationary states, affects the existence condition of each BEC, and changes the switching and self-trapping effects on the two BECs. The dynamic mechanism is demonstrated by performing a coordinate of classical particle moving in an effective potential field, and confirmed by the evolution of the atom population transferring ratio.

The Weak-Coupling of Bose-Einstein Condensates

The coherent characteristics of four trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) conjunct one by one in a ring shape which is divided by two far off-resonant lasers, are studied. Four coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to describe the dynamics of the system. Two kinds of self-trapping effects are discussed in the coupled BECs, and the phase diagrams for different initial conditions and different coupling strengths are discussed. This study can be used to determine interaction parameters between atoms in BEC.

Effect of decoherence on the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential

Wei-Wei Wang, Libin Fu, X. X. Yi

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential in the mean-field approximation. Decoherence effects are considered by analyzing the couplings of the condensate to the environment. Two kinds of coupling are taken into account. With the first kind of coupling dominating, decoherence can enhance self-trapping by increasing the damping of the oscillations in the dynamics, while decoherence from the second kind of condensate-environment coupling leads to spoiling of the quantum tunneling and self-trapping.
