Abstract

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential in the mean-field approximation. Decoherence effects are considered by analyzing the couplings of the condensate to the environment. Two kinds of coupling are taken into account. With the first kind of coupling dominating, decoherence can enhance self-trapping by increasing the damping of the oscillations in the dynamics, while decoherence from the second kind of condensate-environment coupling leads to spoiling of the quantum tunneling and self-trapping.

Coherence dynamics of a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate coupled with the environment

We investigate the coherence dynamics of a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate coupled with the environment in the mean-field approximation. We give an analytical result of the time-average coherence in the absence of system-environment coupling, and find that the time-average coherence attains its maximum value at the critical point which corresponds to the boundary between the self-trapping regime and the Josephson oscillation regime. The effect of noise on dynamical coherence is also considered by analyzing the couplings of the condensate to the environment. With the first kind of coupling, the coherence finally stabilizes at a fixed value. Meanwhile, we show that the presence of the noise can even enhance the coherence for some particular interaction. With the second kind of coupling as collisional dephasing, the noise leads a sudden transition of the coherence which then subjects to an exponential decay.

Mean-Field Dynamics of a Two-Mode Bose-Einstein Condensate Subject to Decoherence

B. Cui, Wu Song-Lin, YI Xue-Xi

We discuss the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential subject to decoherence (or particle loss). Starting from the full many-body dynamics described by the master equation, an effective Gross-Pitaevskii-like equation is derived in the mean-field approximation. By numerically solving the GP equation, we find that macroscopic quantum self-trapping disappears for strong decoherence, while generalized self-trapping occurs under weak decoherence. The fixed points have been calculated, and we find that an abrupt change from elliptic to an attractor and a repeller occurs, reflecting the metastable behavior of the system around these points.

Time-dependent self-trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential

B. Cui, L. C. Wang, X. X. Yi

Based on the mean-field approximation and a phase-space analysis, we discuss the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a double-well potential. The condensates are found to be trapped in the time-dependent eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian; we refer to this effect as time-dependent self-trapping of BECs. By comparison of this self-trapping with the adiabatic evolution, we find that adiabatic evolution beyond the traditional adiabatic condition can be achieved in BECs. Furthermore, the population imbalance of the BECs in the wells can be controlled by manipulating the atom-atom couplings and the driving field. The fixed points for the system are also calculated and discussed.

The role of inter-well tunnelling strength on coherence dynamics of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates

Li-Hua Lü, Xiaoqiang Xu, You‐Quan Li

Coherence dynamics of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates in double wells is investigated in the mean-field approximation. We show that the system can exhibit decoherence phenomena even without the condensate–environment coupling and the variation tendency of the degree of coherence depends not only on the parameters of the system but also the initial states. We also investigate the time evolution of the degree of coherence for a Rosen–Zener form of tunnelling strength, and propose a method to get a condensate system with a certain degree of coherence through a time-dependent tunnelling strength.

Self-trapping and its periodic modulation of Bose-Einstein condensates in double-well trap

Guanfang Wang, Fu Li-Bin, Zhao Hong +2 more

Self-trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in double-well trap is investigated. Two kinds of self-trapping are discussed through phase space analysis in the mean-field approximation: 1) The number of atoms oscillates near an equilibrium point in the phase space, while relative phase increases monotonously with time (running-phase); 2) Both the number of particles and the relative phase oscillate near an equilibrium point in the phase space. In particular, we investigate how an external periodic filed influence the self-trapping. It is found that the external periodic field may dramatically modulate the critical points at which the transition to self-trapping occurs. With this, we can observe self-trapping phenomenon in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate with a very weak interaction as well. Finally, the effect of many-body quantum fluctuation on self-trapping is also studied. We also discuss how to observe the self-trapping phenomenon with present experimental techniques.

Phase transition of Bose—Einstein condensate under decoherence

Qiang Zheng, Shan-Feng Yi, Changgang Hu

The effect of decoherence on the phase transition of a Bose—Einstein condensate in a symmetric double-well potential is determined by the mean atom number difference. It still has two phases, the tunneling phase and the self-trapping phase, even under decoherence. The density matrix and the operator fidelity also show very different behaviors in the two phases. This suggests that operator fidelity can be used to characterize the phase transition of this Bose—Einstein condensate model, even under decoherence.
