Self-diffraction of high-power short light pulses in resonant media

Abstract

A theoretical analysis is made of the self-diffraction of short light pulses in an induced amplitude-phase grating in a thin layer of resonant medium. Expressions describing the amplitudes (intensities) of the diffracted beams are derived and analyzed. It is shown that the nature of the amplitude modulation of the light diffracted into small angles depends strongly on the amplitudes of the input pulses. It is demonstrated that transient self-diffraction of short pulses can be used in estimating the dipole moment of a saturable transition.

Mechanisms of diffraction of light by optically induced gratings in absorbing media

Pavel A Apanasevich, Anatolii A Afanas'ev, А. И. Урбанович

A theoretical analysis is made of the transformation of light waves by optically induced amplitude-phase gratings of different order in a saturable absorbing medium. Allowance is made for gratings appearing; due to the absorption saturation and inhomogeneous heating of the medium. It is shown that, under certain conditions, the higher-order gratings may play a considerable role in the diffraction process. The contributions made by multistage and direct mechanisms to the n-th order diffraction are calculated. Estimates are obtained of the conditions which must be satisfied by the intensity and duration of radiation pulses, as well as by the optical properties and thickness of the absorbing medium, for these contributions to be comparable.

Time-dependent self-action of periodically modulated laser beams in resonant media

Vladimir Leonardovich Derbov, Vladislav Viktorovich Serov, Inna L. Plastun +1 more

We study the self-action of an amplitude-modulated beam in a two-level saturable absorbing medium. We also consider the radial quadratic dependence of the linear refraction index to apply the results to doped waveguides. As the modulation period approaches the relaxation times, the medium response is no more instantaneous, so that one should solve the full set of Maxwell-Bloch equations. We propose a second-order scheme with the Gauss-Laguerre transformation of the transverse field pattern. A simplified approach based on the synchronous interaction approximation is used for thin layers. We analyze the transient behavior of the medium response and its manifestation in the modulation of the beam diffracting after a thin saturable absorber. Nonlinear distortions of the modulation signal passed through a doped waveguide appear to be unexpectedly small compared with those of the local polarization and population difference.

Propagation of spatially inhomogeneous radiation in nonlinear resonant media

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, E M Zemskov

A theoretical study is made of the influence of diffraction by self-induced amplitude gratings on propagation of spatially inhomogeneous radiation in nonlinear resonant media. Dependences of the gain and absorption, and also of the distortion of the spatial spectrum on the parameters of the medium and radiation are determined. It is shown that interfering radiation is amplified and absorbed under saturation conditions less strongly than is spatially homogeneous radiation.

Resonant self-focusing of periodically modulated laser beams

Vladimir Leonardovich Derbov, Inna L. Plastun

On-resonance self-action of a beam with periodically modulated amplitude in a two-level saturable absorber is studied numerically. When the period of modulation is comparable with relaxation times, one cannot describe the medium by means of susceptibility, and the response of the medium to the amplitude variation is not immediate. We solve the Bloch equations in each point of the medium to find this response correctly. Transient behavior followed by stable oscillations of population difference and polarization vector is shown to depend strongly on the frequency and amplitude of modulation. Beam propagation is considered using a simplified model of a thin absorber followed by free space, the propagation distance being small compared with the modulation wavelength. Manifestations of non-stationary response of the medium in the output intensity behavior are analyzed.

Effectiveness of noncoplanar Raman–Nath self-diffraction in resonant media

Anatolii A Afanas'ev, M V Dotsenko

A theoretical analysis is made of noncoplanar four-beam Raman–Nath self-diffraction in media with saturable absorption. The mechanisms responsible for the generation of the first- and second-order diffracted beams are identified. The intensities of the diffracted beams not lying in the planes of convergence of the exciting beams can, for certain phase relationships, be considerably higher (by a factor of ~ 102) than the intensities of the beams in these planes. The reason for the dependence of the effectiveness of self-diffraction on phase relationships between the excited beams is interference between elementary diffraction processes in various light-induced gratings.
